He has a point. I can't speak for the faculty or the research, but the graduates are certainly smarter than most of the rest.

May be for their (Graduates) 12 years of very very hard work. Not the last 4 that they spend in the IITs. This is just an assumption - don't know much about IITs study methods and internals.
Do not know about the quality of faculty at IITs, but my engineering profs. were IIT grads (M.Tech/PhD), and barring one, rest of them did a pretty lousy job at teaching engineering subjects.
When one is teaching a tough concept like non-ideal thermodynamics, one has to be very smart in first understanding the concept and then conveying it to the students.
The way B.Tech is recognized in IIT, I dobut M.Tech.., so do the resulting products.

But again, intelligence is not directly related to teaching abilities either. Teaching requires the ability to articulate and pass on the knowledge. Not all have that ability.
