It is the first time we are taking our 22mth on a flight and am wondering how he will pass his time and how he will react to the new enviornment in the plane. Can anyone share some tips and tricks. Somehow am thinking too much about this and wondering if it will be for nothing since he may take it like a train or a bus ride. Please share your experience.

Donot worry.
22 months is a good age where the baby will not disturb you during the flights.
Just show the child some magazines with colourful pictures during take off and landing
Peace

Well, they will get bored soon. The TV can't really do much but the walking around the plane, food could entertain them a bit.
Slightly reduced sleep a night before ( it happens to us), letting the kid to walk around the plane will get them tired easily and draw them to a good sleep.

Let the air flow from the control on top of your seat to a mild soothing level that would help prolonging the sleep (avoid sweat)..

The kid is not going to be alone, pairing with kids of similar age group will help them to offset the boredom .

I took my 22 month old in 2008...just me and him. It all depends on the personality of the child. For the most part, the sleep timing will not coincide with yours even if it is a normal bedtime. The environment usually is distracting and hence the child might not sleep enough hours. Hence, try to sleep when the child sleeps and vice versa, or else it could be a very tiring journey.

I had few books I took with me and food he liked (yogurt, cheese sticks, boiled egg, etc....keeping in mind every one those are perishable and hence have to be used or thrown away). I had ordered child meals during booking...hence he had pasta and chicken...his favorites.

Walk around the plane few times after things quiet down in the aisle just to keep the child stretched. PTV on the back of the seat doesn't do much since the headsets get awkward. I had my portable DVD player and that helped both during the flights and during layovers.

If the child wears layered clothing for warmth, lighten up the layers to keep the child from sweating as the journey commences. Feeling hot and tired is not a good combination.

In my case, since I was traveling by myself as a single parent, I received lots of help at all airports (Detroit, Amsterdam and Mumbai) without me ever asking for it.

My few times experience with my son who was few months, 1 & 2 when we flew.

Try to tire him up in the airport before boarding, baby will have lot to see at airport and just after boarding, so try to make him busy that time rather letting sleep. after sometime lack of sleep and tireness will make him cranky , that will be tough period, try to feed him and show something on laptop, tv or whatever panel you have. He should sleep after sometime. Follow all other good advices given above sply abt clothing.

He will be very active after sleep , so let him move around, you follow him for safety. With his age he will easily follow the drill of bfast/lunch provided on plane. Keep his favorite toy handy and also keep a surprise (another favorite toy or a brand new) in handbag , when he cries show him that one , he will be again busy :-). try to avoid the toys which make noise. soft or hot wheel cars are best.

If nothing else me and my wife took turns to entertain him. Once even the flight attendant took him away ( he is a handsome kid ;-) ) and when we went to their area after 30 mins , this guy was surrounded by 3 air hostess !. I wish I had clicked that photo.

Stop worrying, time will 'fly' ;-)
