I am renting a basement apartment in Mississauga. Few days back due to the broken shade of window basement got flooded. I informed the landlord and he did nothing, basement got flooded again today. I inquired about the status from the city and learned that the basement is illegal. One laptop and a very important hard drive was damaged due to the water logging. I want to claim damages from the landlord. What should I do? what are my options against him?

I can help you by telling that most of the basement are not legit but some are if constructed after taking the permission from the city they living in.

As far as taking any steps for your damages I am not the right person to say anything.

oh well... by informing city hez already screwed... screw him more by going to court. Do you have rental agreement? did you inform him in writing?

Bheekhoo dear,

you should read your rental agreement, at times owners add a clause where renter is responsible for insurance of his belongings as well also responsible for damages caused due to carelessness. Do not get rewinded into your own net by complaining, in order to get compensated.

Also did you complain abt broken window pane in writing or email ? No ?
