Hi Desis,
I need some help with tax returns for my dad and mum who immigrated to canada on 2012. We are the sponsors and I am a little confused about how they should to file a return if they don't have any Canadian Income. They have property back in India which I can report on the Tax Return but is it okay to have a zero tax return sent to the CRA ? They have been in Canada for more than 183 days to comply with the residency rules. But are currently in India and will be coming back this year.
Also they live with me so can I put them as my dependents at I spend for food and all the other expenses which is required.
Much Appreciated.
Your parents need to file a return even if they don't have any income. They'll be eligible for GST and Trillium Benefit.
As regards you showing your parents as dependants, that's fine. Depending on your parents age, you will be eligible to claim the caregiver amount.
