Hi Folks,

First off, thanks in advance for reading. My wife's interested in pursuing post grad studies in Canada. We applied to a bunch of colleges and she recently received an acceptance letter from seneca. She's also applied to other colleges but is still awaiting to hear from them.

Now here's the tricky part. Both of us live and work in Japan. I am wondering if we should wait for an acknowledgement from other colleges before applying for a visa or should we go ahead and apply for a student visa on seneca's acceptance letter. Would it be possible to change our college preference later (while CIC's still processing our visa).

The reason for my urgency is that my work permit expires in 3 months (I've been living here for over a year) and would ideally like to apply for the student visa while we are in Japan. Would you rather that I return back to India and apply from there or is applying from Japan a good idea?

*I am applying for an open work permit along with her application

You can apply after your return to India.
Canadian government would be more convinced that you will come back after studies are over.
Your abroad stay ( japan) will be a definite plus point.
You can always change the college ..... no problem.

Hi Gurram,

Thanks for the reply. Another reason for us to apply in Japan was the fact that both of us had jobs and if we were to head back home, we would be unemployed at the stage of application. Do you reckon its a fair plan still? I was also wondering if it would be a good idea to apply online in Japan but provide the Indian mailing address so that if/when there is a communication or paperwork from the CIC, it would be diverted to our Indian address. Japan does not have a Canadian Embassy so even if we were to give an interview, we'd anyway have to travel to Philippines to do so.

Although I wonder if its any consolation but I've studied and lived in Canada and Singapore before.

Thanks again for the read.

SENECA COLLEGE WILL ONLY PROVIDE YOU WTH A DIPLOMA AND NOT A POST GRADUATE DEGREE, Please check and see if that is what you want....

You providing us with small bits and pieces of information in each of your post does not make much sense in giving you too much of any directions.

You say that you have studied in Canada and lived here. So, they have a big dossier on your life here and might not call for an interview. That is my opinion. You should apply for a OWP and try and get entry into Canada and explore the possibilities of PR while you are here, while your spouse is doing her studies.

Now to the studies, I know that some of the colleges have slowly expanded to provide Post Graduate studies here and if your wife has selected one such course then it will be O.K. Otherwise a College and a Vocational school will only provide you with a Diploma or a Degree as the case may be and currently it will cost you both an arm and a leg to pay for the fees. Nevertheless, accept that course to get entry into Canada and if need be, switch the studies to an University course, if get selected or if that is the primary criteria of entry into Canada here.

It is almost February and three months will put you into the month of May. If you have an idea to take a summer course, or seek summer employment here, you should get the Student and dependent VISA within that period and as long as some one in Japan can forward to you the mail from your end there, get it couriered to India and follow the directions given in the letter, or the COPR.

Good Luck.

FH.
