Dear friends,
Please educate me on buying a used car specially, from show rooms. What are the "must see" items / documents / certificates that i should see before finalizing the deal. Also please tell if i like a car now and buy it, but am not sure so far about from where will i get the insurance policy,...should i simply park it carry on my shop around for the quotes OR i should only buy the car once i am done with my quote search for insurance. Can i not get my car registered unless insurance is done ! Is it unlawful to drive a car which is not insured yet but i have already bought ! OR it all goes in parallel, purchase, insure, transfer, register... !!
Thanks
When buying a used car either from a private seller or a showroom, the seller should give you the following documents:
* the vehicle portion of the owner’s permit with the completed portion on the back
* the Used Vehicle Information Package, including the Bill of Sale with the name of the seller and purchase price. The Bill of Sale must be signed and dated by both the buyer and seller
The following are optional:
* Drive Clean Test Certificate (if applicable), and
* Safety Certificate
You can buy a used car without insurance, but you cannot register or drive it. Yes, driving without insurance and registration is illegal in Ontario.
When you register the vehicle, you'll need the insurance certificate.
You must register your name as the new owner of the vehicle within 6 days of the purchase

Could be wrong.
In 2002 Dec. I had bought a car in a registered showroom. The agent had registered the car to me in my name without a driving insurance.
I had taken it from the showroom and had driven it home, with out the insurance (agree that this is illegal). Once at home, I parked the car in my parking slot and then went about finding and getting the insurance.
To the OP :
If you buy in the showroom, the agent will do everything. Some may even say that the car is a lemon (condemned / written off) and ask you to counter sign so that it is an indication that it was informed to you. Once I bought a lemon (without knowing about it) and I could not sell back the car, as no one was interested in buying it. Though by that time, I had already driven the car for over 5 years and I ended up selling as a junk car for $ 500.
