Now that the OCI renewal for kids has become a very complex process, there are chances I will not be able to get it processed before I need to fly.
When I raised this concern to the BLS official, she said that you could always apply a visit visa and go while the process is in progress.
So I assume, we could avail that Visa on arrival schema or worst come a Visit Visa to overcome the longer OCI process even if its half way through.
Any comments, first hand experience.

Yep.... A couple of years ago, while I was waiting for transfer of OCI to the new pp for my child, I had to apply for a Visitor Visa, since the "transfer" did not happen in a timely manner.
Don't submit the new CND PP (for OCI) to BLS if you know you won't get it back on time.

Yes you can apply for a e-visa, one of my friend in similar situation did that.
Some people on other forums have also reported travelling with old and new passport with OCI card for their kids and they experienced no issues.
Though I applied for OCI for my younger kid (elder is PIO), I am stalling any more renewal process after going through the pain of the OCI bureaucracy, its really phenomenal.
I've decided to apply Visit visa for the OCI kid and continue to use PIO for the other kid until the PIO runs out and use Visitor visa only there after.
I have 10 more years to even worry about renewing my OCI. By then there will another 2000 different processes forms, OCI might get completely invalidated and you may need to get PCI or some XXXX, so let us see then.

Indian bureaucracy chooses all wrong and misleading names. At one point, OCI had references to dual citizenship, which it never was and is not. No idea why eTourist Visa is called visa on arrival generally by the media and all. You cannot land on Indian soil and then get visa. You have to apply beforehand.
Yes, OCI renewal is same as fresh application with complete set of documents as original and it has same timelines as fresh application.
