Hello Group Members,

I am planning to apply for PR under Express Entry and would request the advice from the group members:

Personal Details:
I am an Electrical Engineer with MBA in Operations working for an MNC in India as Manager Exports Project ( I am involved in Substation EPC business for Utilities in Bangladesh and African Countries). I have more than 13 Years of Experience in Substation Project Management and Project Acquisitions.

My Wife is also an Electrical Engineering with MBA working for an MNC (Same as mine ) in India as Manager Project, she is having more than 13 Years of Experience in Substation Project Management.

We have a 2 year old Son.

Retired Parents.

I would like advise on following points;

1. What would be the job prospects for our profile? I have researched the internet but I am not able to get a clear idea about the Job market for our profile.
2. Are there any job consultants whom we can contact from India so as to explore the job opportunities ( a job offer also increase our Points for Express entry)?
3. Which city is recommended for us considering job market for our profile?
4. We plan that once we get the PR I would move to Canada and look for Job and subsequently my Wife would move with our Son.

Would highly appreciate your suggestions!!!

Thanks,

Akash

When you say that that you are re-locating to Canada, am I to understand that you were a student here some time back? Or you were on a Work Permit or you have lived here in the North American Continent? If so, then, you have a lot of knowledge and Work Experience. Then again, when you say Immigrate through Express Entry, I know you have just used the "RE" for a shift of residence. That is O.K.

Regardless. You will need to get your Language Proficiency Established first. Which will be IELTS Exam Score for both of you. I might add, it has to be a very high score if you are seeking a post noteworthy and with remunerations entering into quarter of a million in salaries, that is what they command. But for that you will also need a P.Eng., designation to go with it. More on it if you decide to get in and study--- for starters.

There was a good job with the same asking, going in the UAE, which was at the start of the year and by the by it was TAX FREE! See if the offer is still on the table? I see, you must be planning the future for the two year old.

Please include your Parents too when you apply. They can be sponsored after three years of your entry.

They put a lid on all of these jobs. Also they trimmed the salaries a bit for the starting level and entry levels. Now they are whittling them down slowly and stopped the legal hiring process. Most of them are getting promoted from within. So you do not see many ADs.

Since you get your job on your own merits, there is no need for consultants now a days. But there are a few that place you overseas and are still conducting their placement services. They are still there, you have to see some of their ads. (KPMG)

If only you both can speak a teensy weensy bit of FRENCH, I am presumptuous, you both can land a job on arrival there in Quebec, Montreal that is and you can hit the ground running, if you also can get qualified for the IEEE membership. (Which you ought to have by now, am I correct?!) Well, it all depends on the publications that you both have made or contributed to the profession. Again I am way over my head assuming things.

AND, when you move, please ALL Three of you Move together, can land here by different flights too, unless you are adhering to the British protocol. In my books, flying has been very safe in the current days of travel. Also, there are NON STOP flights between India and Canada over the 'Polaroute' flights.

In short if you apply you can be here with in an year of applying. But do sit for the Next available IELTS sitting. Hope this helps.

FH.

My honest advice to both of you is that you will regret and repent the decision to move to Canada.

Canada doesn't need educated and qualified folks like you. Canada is not USA. What they need is unskilled manual labourers.

Stay in Aamchi Mumbai, look after your retired parents and raise your son in a nice Indian culture.

Job consultants are a waste of time., who will loot you and charge you fees with fake job offers and searches.

You will be working as a cab driver, warehouse worker, security guard or in some fast food joint after coming here. Your wife will be doing something similar.

Canada is a cold, brutal, depressing and unforgiving country for immigrants like you. Your life savings will be eroded after coming here trying to chase the immigrant dream ( nightmare )

Indian education & experience has ZERO value over here, unless you are willing to flip burgers in a fast food joint.

Canada's biggest economy is exploiting and using immigrants. You will realise this after coming here. Subtle and Intellectual racism is rampant in Canada.

I am in the same field and understand your concern. Substation and utility EPC is a specialized field in Canada and each province has its own utility. The substation and transmission lines are very different here due to weather conditions and the way they are designed and constructed are not the same as in India.

Majority of the project managers in Canada have hands-on experience and grew up in the company from engineering / maintenance and over a period of time became project managers. Hence the MBA is not really a requirement but a PMP certification is certainly be helpful. Since you have an electrical engineering degree, that is useful as well.

To answer some of your concerns,
1. What would be the job prospects for our profile? I have researched the internet but I am not able to get a clear idea about the Job market for our profile.

You need to check the utility companies in each province(for ex, Ontario Hydro, BC Hydro, Altalink, Sask power, Manitoba Hydro, Nalcor etc or EPC companies like SNC Lavalin, ABB, Siemens, ATCO Electric, Stantec to name a few major players and there are quite a number of minor companies engaged in substation design and construction as well. Some of the EPC companies may not do the full EPC substation but mostly involve in the control buildings etc or design. there are quite a lot of small to major construction companies in Canada and If you have worked as a site manager, that would be a great asset and will be easier to get a job.

2. Are there any job consultants whom we can contact from India so as to explore the job opportunities ( a job offer also increase our Points for Express entry)? There are several consultants but as any other field, they may consider talking to you only when you are in Canada.

3. Which city is recommended for us considering job market for our profile?
4. We plan that once we get the PR I would move to Canada and look for Job and subsequently my Wife would move with our Son.

Hope this is useful.

If you look in some of the ADs, you will see what they offer. But what it is that these executives here in Canada get as BONUSES is out of this world. Take a look. But they all are sharp as a tack.

They offer peanuts here in a few of the jobs..:
Here is one from NAUKRI. : https://www.naukri.com/ehv-substation-project-jobs

A far cry from decent wages...:

First of all thanks a lot to FH, CKB, GKT for you advise.

FH - My Bad, We are not relocating to Canada but will be moving to Canada from India. We do think P.Eng will add value to our degree and will try and get it once in Canada. We are already preparing for IELTS. We have applied to lot of Jobs from LinkedIn and other job portals, but We feel that the shortlisting eventually boils down to whether we are authorized to work in Canada (WP or PR).

Our French knowledge is as good as nil. We may work on it once the IELTS and PMP is through, while our PR application is in process.

We do understand that the road ahead might not be a smooth sail, but there is a lot of apprehension with lots of mixed reviews available on internet. It makes you feel that one would end up doing odd jobs for the rest of life once in Canada.

Main reason for moving to Canada is to have a better life and good future for our kid.

CKB- I appreciate your honest feedback and would definitely keep in mind the advise. My plan is to ensure that atleast one of us secure a good job before we disrupt the setup in India.

gktaurus - Its good to know that you are from the same stream as I am. I am searching for the utility companies suggested by you (I am already registered with a few of them). We are already preparing for our PMP and hope to crack is soon. We are working as overall in charge of projects and have worked as Site Manager too. I hope that we (or atleast one of us) land a job before we move there. We are willing to start down a few levels as this will help us get to understand the working style and culture.

I am also working in the same field (but in Engineering) . I came on a intra company transfer in 2015 .

Job prospects in the field is extremely low at the moment. It is expected to be better in a year.

Indian experience is not completely invalid but you will be doing a job that is at least one level lower compared to what you were doing previously in India.

As per my limited knowledge of the market in Canada, Montreal is the place for Substation and related fields since Hydro Quebec is the biggest player in the field. Many companies are headquartered here and PM roles are available. But you should have good communication skills in French. I am trying to get myself trained but it is not an easy language to master.

P Eng is easier in other provinces than Quebec because you need to have French language skills.

It is good to have P Eng to get a good salary for Engineering jobs. I doubt if it is worth it for PM.

My 2 cents: you will start at a lower salary. Forget saving money, will take at least 3-4 years to really settle down and to compare with life back home.

If I were you: Since both you and your wife are working and earning well in India, I feel that your career and your quality of life in India will be better. Of course, cleanliness and Pollution free environment is definitely a positive here.

North American Culture is hire and fire. You can never have a secure feeling of job security.

Nice to see someone from the same fraternity in the forum.
At the end of the day, everything is upto you to decide

Good luck
