Hi guys,
I have a few questions regarding a career in Project Management. I am currently researching about this field for my progression in Canadian and US job market. Just a background. I am working in IT sector with a major Cdn. Telecom company. Have about 6 years of Canadian experience out of the total 13 years, alongwith the Business education.
Since, I will be a fresher out of the PM course, I want to know whether it will be worth my time and money to work my way through the PM education/certification? Also, how much annual salary I can foresee for a Project Manager in an IT company (I am researching it online at the same time)? I certainly don't want to spend $6000-$7000 without any return.
Please advise.
Thanks
How are you planning on spending the $6k to $7k.
My 2cents...
You mentioned that you are in IT, what's your role in IT. I'd suggest, ask your manager at work if they would :
1. Allow you to job shadow a PM
2. Be willing to give you some PM type responsibilities, small tasks to start off with
Are you planning on doing your PMP certification. If so, I can assist you. PM me and we can chat. For the PMP certification, if you're willing to do some self study, it should not cost you more that $1k all incl (that includes $500 for the exam fees and PMI membership)
There is another CD member in telecom too. He cleared his PMP while on job, using similar strategy I mentioned above.
At my work place we have an informal arrangement for a similar strategy. It motivates employees and moves them one step closer to their career goals.
As regards your query about annual salary, that's anyone's guess. Certainly getting a PMP certification, does give you an edge over others. Your salary will mostly depend on your skills level and how well you sell yourself.
Hope that helps... good luck...

Agree with SS’s comments – they are accurate.
Even if you need to join around 40 hrs of required in-class training, it will cost you less than $ 500 if you join any community college like Humber.
I have soft copies of study material; let me know if you are interested.

Thanks guys! With $6-7k, I was referring to the University's certificate courses in Project Management (in-class). As I have researched, they charge no less than $6k. Since my research is still in infancy, I would certainly consider the options that you provided me with.
Anyway, good to know that there are other avenues and alternatives exist. Unfortunately, I am not in Toronto so couldn't get to Humber or other community colleges. I'll soon send you guys a message for study material and a further guidance.
Sudesingh and Delhite, thanks a bunch for your valuable input.

What is your goal in doing the Project Management course.
1. Is it to just gain knowledge OR
2. Is it to get 40 contact hours to be eligible for your PMP certification, OR
3. Both
If it's (2) then check out http://pmstudy.com/ They have a course for as low as $90. But you'd have to do self study also.
Sudesingh,
I have sent you a PM.
