Can someone tell me prices for these items in Canada
01. SonyTV 25
02. VCR - Panasonic or otherwise
03. Microwave
04. Dining Table - 6 Chairs - good quality
05. Sofa Set - Wood - 3 seater x 2 seater x 2 chairs - good quality
06. Bed - Wood - King size - good quality
07. Child Bed -single - good quality
08. Utensils/Cutlery
How do new comers purchase ? Credit ? or Cash ? or Installment ? Any suggestions ?
How are goods delivered ? generally do prices include delivery ?

1. new $350, other less expensive model $225-$350, used $50-$75...
2. $50 (cheaper model) - $150 (higher end brand)...
3. $75-$400 depending on what features you want...
4. again varies widely, lower end $400 (metal) - $4000 (solid oak)...
5. anywhere from $800 (fabric)-$5000 (high end leather)...
6. king size - around $1000 (mattress excluded - branded mattress and box spring can run another $1400-$2200, cheaper alternatives, brand new for about $400)... other option is, just buy a frame and mattresses, you can get the whole thing brand new for about $400... look for places that sell wholesale to motel's... you can find them in the local classifieds..
7. $110 (something you buy in walmart) to $500 (higher end)...
8. decent set of non stick pots etc about $80 (3 covered pots one pan usually)... as for plates and spoons etc, again varies widely.. a complete dinner set of corelle for 4 is about $40 (plates, bowls, coffee cups and saucers etc).. some of the cheaper end spoons and forks for about $0.50 each...
cash is always best, specially if you are new to the country, the last thing you want to do is rack up a lot of debt as soon as you get here... as for delivery, if you buy brand new stuff from stores, you have the option of getting them to deliver it for you (sometimes for free, sometimes you pay)... the smaller stuff you can carry...
oh, the above numbers, depending on where you will buy from, if they are new, add in either 7% or 15% tax...
Elaborate post Bighead . It appears that sofas and beds are costlier there. Electronics is more or less the same .
If a person buys on credit he develops a credit hostory by paying up at right time which can be later used as a mesure for applying big loan with a bank .
1 q - how much is the transportation cost of the bed / sofa ?

yes, but if you max out your credit limit as soon as you get it because you just made major furniture purchases, it raises red flags to lenders... the trick is, to have credit, but not use it too much and definately not use up all of it... thats the best way to quickly buildup positive credit history...

not a lot of retailers will tell you this, but delivery is something that is always negotiable... generally they will quote you between $25-$50 for delivery and setup, but if you haggle with the sales guy and tell them the only condition you will buy the stuff is if he agrees to deliver it for free, they usually agree...
most furniture sales people work on commission, and the two places where they have a lot of leeway is in deliver charges and extended warranties... you may not be able to negotiate much on the actual price of the goods, because that is where his commission comes from, but you can very easily walk away with free delivery and setup, and in a lot of cases, with free or very cheap extended warranties...
obviously, the larger your bill at the store, the more room you have to demand a better deal...

Saw your post of queries and thought I might give you a helping hand too, since I will be heading to Canadian shores soon..
Well I really don’t know how useful the links I provide may be to you, but as far as I know this is the best next thing of getting a realistic price check on cost of these things from major shopping arenas..
I wouldn’t necessarily suggest to buy any thing or everything from the below links as such, primarily cos there’s a good possibility one can get better deal on various appliances and things.
My sincere suggestion is look around, compare the prices and try and get the best value for your money… hahhahah what am I saying I have to do the same soon..
Like I said it’s just a price look up of what to expect for new comers such as you and me when coming to Canada.
