Would really appreciate if somebody could please give me an idea about the prices of the following items (New and second hand).

Item Second hand price New Price
Double bed (King)
Sofa set (5/6 seater)
Dining table (6 chair)
21" TV
Refrigerator (300L)
Washing machine
(5Kg, Fully Aut, Front L.)
PC Desktop
Cupboards
(are these built-in in
apartments/houses?)

I know there must be different brands and varieties available in the market and the choice varies from person to person but my intention is to have an estimate about the range that a newcomer will spend on such items. I am not asking for premium range brands or luxurious range. Something decent and comfortable stuff to furnish the house (1 BR) of a newcomer ( a couple) whose lifestyle is not luxurious but average. Same goes for the second hand stuff too. Decent looking, comfortable and in good condition. Is second hand stuff easily available? Is there any second hand market where one can find all this stuff or we have to look in the classifieds? Sorry if I have missed on some parameter. All the seniors please do reply as it will give me and others a good idea about the initial capital expenditure a newcomer has to incur.

Vishal,
As regards to Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Cupboards.....I would say if you are coming new and if you are going to rent a place, you do not have to worry about that. Everything will be included. When you rent a place, major appliances like gas Burner/electric burner/stove (CHULHA) and fridge is included.........in most cases laundry would also be included and even if it is not included, you will have to pay extra for doing laundry.......you don't have to buy your own machine/dryer.
Double Bed (king) is not that much in trend......it is Queen size which is easily available and bit cheaper too. You may buy Brand New Queen size mattress and box (to support mattress) from $350 to $ 2500, depends on your choice but a 'Sasta, Sunder and Tikau' mattress, you can get for about $450-$500, then for the bed, you are looking for another about $300........if you are coming in summer, you may want to keep an eye for 'Garage Sales' or 'Moving sales' which is normally held privately on weekends by those who are shifting and want to get rid of their old stuff..............for second hand table etc, you have options like garage sales, moving sales, goodwill stores, value village, thrift store....(these stores are outlets of used stuff including clothes, shoes, tables, chairs etc..etc..), you can also get second hand tables/chair/dinning table from so many other places....or you may get brand new........but the question is: would you really want to spend money initially and how much would you want to spend??? Initially, if you do not have any sofa or dining table in your house, you don't have to feel ashamed-of......it had happened and happens with every body who so ever comes new.............there are much better things to worry about rather than furniture.......just a thought.....it all depends on your preferences and choice and thinking and so on and so on.........
For a TV, you may get refurbished 21" TV for about $250 with the free VCR, for a brand new, you may get for little bit more. Check out http://www.futureshop.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK for more....
Desktop, you may get for $350-$500, good one, assembled, with/without monitor, some times printer/web cam free, again check out: http://www.futureshop.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK, http://www.mdg.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK, http://www.compusmart.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK, http://www.dell.ca/marchdeals" rel="nofollow">LINK

Great suggestions Sanjeev. " Chulha" and " sasta sundar tikau " cracked me up....heard it after a long time ..:D

btw aaapke kanhi bihar /up se to koi wasta nahi hai?

for temp accomodation immediately after landing it is advisable to take furnished basement type accomdation ( there are many in classified section of this site as well) then keep looking for 2nd hand sales on the weekends.

one need which many new immigrant badly feel is that there are not many transport services available to shift their stuff from stores or point of sales to their new homes. the stores charge $100 for single delivery and that is only items from that store.

maybe this could be a good business opportunity for those who have a truck or maybe some can even rent an open truck on weekends and offer this service to new immigrants at reasonable rates.
