Hi all!
I will be landing in May'05 with my husband and 4 yr old son.We will thereafter look for an apartment close to subway/shop.After applying for our SIN/OHIP/opening bank A/c etc my husband plans to leave and continue working in India for a while and join us after 6-8 months once we are settled and I have a job.My son will start school in September'05 and I plan to start working ASAP too.
How safe is Toronto for a single lady (of sorts)?How convenient?Any tips or neighbourhoods to avoid?Any advice will be appreciated.
Generally speaking, Toronto is a pretty safe city. I live near the Sqauare One area in Mississauga and you can see women walking around by themsleves around 10/11 pm without any hesitation.
Maybe women can throw more light, but in North America, a woman living by herself isn't such a big deal. You may want to avoid staying in Certain areas in Scarborough, the Jane/Finch intersection area etc etc.
I'd say most of Mississauga is a pretty safe bet if its convenient for you.

I don't think it should be a problem at all. Single parents is such a common phenomenon here. Also a practical piece of advice. Look for an apartment in a building where there are some Indian/Pakistani families. This way you can built up a support system and also when you take up a job, you can get a cheap day care for your child. Normally desi families will charge $2 an hour for keeping your child whereas registered day care will be very expensive.

I have personally seen in my building "some" not all desi males behave funny and try to chat up with single females as they suddenly get new found freedom in Canada.
That way white males are more open minded.
