Passport mailing 'shocked' Grit MP
By TOM GODFREY, Sun Media
TORONTO -- Passports and other sensitive immigration documents are routinely sent to clients nationwide in the regular mail where they can be lost or stolen, police and politicians warn. Immigration department officials said it is too expensive to send the documents by protected, registered mail and people may have to pay extra for that service.
"I am shocked that these documents are being sent in the regular mail," said Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis. "This practice should be stopped immediately."
Karygiannis said the important documents, belonging to refugees, landed immigrants and Canadians, can be stolen and used by criminals or terrorists.
"These documents can easily end up in the hands of those who pose a security risk," he said last week.
Karygiannis said he found out about the mailing practice several weeks ago after a constituent lost her passport. He has since alerted immigration officials of the concern and they're looking into the matter.
"We are obliged to return these passports in some sort of secure manner," said Canadian visa officer Keith Carter. "It is only a matter of time before something goes astray."

Canada is loosing on their Canadian Experience stigma.......
