My suggestion to mods:
When posting something as a moderator, in order to make clear that what is being posted is when you are playing the role of one, please prefix your post with something like

[/]Moderator hat on

Here say what you have to say as a mod..

[/] Moderator hat off.

After this you are back to your role as an ordinary member and post like one.

I think that is a good idea. Will take a lot of burden off every mod's shoulder - infact, if GG is reading this post, can he do something which was suggested earlier - perhaps simply add one emoticon kind of a thing which only the mods can have access to and use it when they want to act as mods.

Hi Chandresh,

Can you please reply to my query? I think you did not read my post asking about a salary question.

Thanks,

Sorry M2C - I did see the question but did not have enough time to reply earlier.

At the outset, let me tell you frankly that the word 'decent' salary is a highly personal statement - what I might consider as decent, might not be good enough for you, or could be the other way round. So I would NOT like to say what is decent, but can say what can be expected.

Depending on your experience and expertise, for a guy 28 years old and with 5 years experience, some of which is in the US, one can expect a salary of 35-45k. Once you have done your CGA, you can expect it to be over 50. However, if you have some special experience of implementation of any ERP system like SAP or Oracle, getting about 60 K or above as a start will not be a problem too.

Hope I have answered your question.

Cynic,

The idea of my question was to get a first hand reaction. I understand that the definition of decent salary will vary from person to person. However there are certain benchmarks, which can invoke generic reaction as 'good' or 'not so good'. This is irrespective of your lfestyle or expenses.
For example in the UK if I ask how good is 30K Per Annum as salary, the immediate reation would be 'OK - not bad'.
This was the kind of first hand reaction I was looking for.

Now on the other side, I believe in a civilised society, there should be careful selection of words specially when writing on a public forum. ( With whatever cap you wear - Moderator or Non Moderator). I never expected such kind of flavour in this forum.

Cheers

Well., moderators usually run into such problems., as an example I would quote the following post..

http://www.canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=6374&page=2

JD passed an innocent comment with all "smilies "and "cheers" but, the moderators dint leave any stone unturned to chide him and ultimately the thread was locked. Considering both the events, its quite an inconsistent behaviour by the moderator clan. An irrelevant post can always be ignored instead of creating a rackus using the special powers assumed. Anyway, lets not argue about what went wrong with the moderators., coz, as I keep saying., we should never take panga with them..., or else, this thread will also get locked.
Back to the actual question., probably the post was for people like me, ;) , who can easily understand the simple meaning., Decent salary is a term devoid of any personal preferences., like if someone asks me what is the decent salary in India, anything in the 5-6 lakh is decent. Let me give a hypothetical situation., someone from India calls up canada and asks "chandresh bhaiyya., mere bete ko $$$ ka offer mila hai Canada mein., is it OK ?? " .... I dont think anyone will start discussing personal life of the beta here., he can do anything he wants here., but, is the $$$ good enough for a living ??
Fresher buddy, Iam not in canada ., so, I cant answer your question confidently., but, anyway., few guys have already answered.., that should help.., anyway,. what I have garnered from other websites., 50-60 is a good salary to start with ., 50-40 is OK., OK kind... but managable if single.., if moving with family something more than 50-60 is good. Enjoy maadi !!!

Fresher and KD

I would tend to disagree on your concept of decent salary. It is a very personal preference matter and directly related to one's education, status, experience and things that go along with that.

For a person who is coming on Family migration with a high school diploma, 20-25 k would be a decent salary for him. For a lady who got married at the age of 17 before she was out of school and never stepped out of the house in India to earn a living, a 15-20 k salary would be decent.

Similarly, for a lady who got married at the age of 17 before a high school completion but was born in a industrial and very rich family, and got married into an extremely rich family, but not wanting to do continue family business, a 15-20 k salary will be peanuts since she will spoil her life out of frustration of not being able to afford things from Holt Renfrew and Gucci.

For an MBA graduate from Harvard with 5+years experience in investment banking, a salary of 70k CAD might be something like 'kaala paani' - though as a bachelor he will be able to still have lots of goodies that many others will not even dream of.

So what can be peanuts to someone, can be a decent or great for someone else. Four years ago, 50k salary for me would have been just ok, not even decent - but today, even a 30 k would be absolutely great - since my circumstances have changed. So, for the same person, decent can mean different things at different stages in life!

Thanks Chandresh,

Yes, you did answer my question. Your reply opens more avenues of issues like the one you talked about having experience on the implementation of an ERP system. I do not have any, but I want to get some training of some sort such that when I start working I can atleast know what it is and how exactly I need to be of use to any company. I do not want to have training on the content development of such systems but atleast on the user side would want to get acquainted with the system. Is there any training I could think of while I am in the US or any in Canada? I hope to land in Vancouver, do you have any suggestions as to where I could get myself trained on the ERP systems??

Given your experience, knowledge and wisdom I'd rather get the word from you!

Thanks for the earlier reply!

Regards,
M2C
