For single 50-60k/annum.
Married with kids 90-100k/annum.

decent salary or dream salary ...............;)

I'd say, Decent salary... family of 2 + 2, I feel the 90-100k range is decent. Would love to get more, but that's a different story :)

I would call this gossip......................:D OR a person with Sgro's connection.......personally promised salary by her?????? ;)

Most IT professionals, get in the 80-100K range. I have a full-time job with a bank and make in that range. I know of atleast one desi who was making 160K, an IT contractor, back in the boom days in 2000. These days he makes 80K. That may be an exception though.

I would put in my 2 cents:
This discussion is about decent salary and not exceptional salary. You are talking of salary like 100K, matter of fact doctors in Canada get 250K. Just to give inferioty complex to people in 100K figures feeling that they earn decent salary.
I know more than one person making 80K(USD) in India. Are they decent salaries or exceptional salaries????

Jago Desi,

I know personally atleast a dozen, and perhaps more, who make more than 70 k and whose household incomes are above 100k. And they are not exceptional - they are decent guys!

My own colleage from my job before coming to Canada used to get half my salary there - now gets 75k plus - and he is with the govt - not a private comapany! Another friend, one who was retrenched twice in in last 4 years, makes that, and he is CA from India with some other courses that he keeps adding every year to his bag.

These salaries are not exceptional - yes, I am talking for immigrants - and professionals do get it.

Well., moderators usually run into such problems., as an example I would quote the following post..

http://www.canadiandesi.ca/read.php?TID=6374&page=2

JD passed an innocent comment with all "smilies "and "cheers" but, the moderators dint leave any stone unturned to chide him and ultimately the thread was locked. Considering both the events, its quite an inconsistent behaviour by the moderator clan. An irrelevant post can always be ignored instead of creating a rackus using the special powers assumed. Anyway, lets not argue about what went wrong with the moderators., coz, as I keep saying., we should never take panga with them..., or else, this thread will also get locked.
Back to the actual question., probably the post was for people like me, ;) , who can easily understand the simple meaning., Decent salary is a term devoid of any personal preferences., like if someone asks me what is the decent salary in India, anything in the 5-6 lakh is decent. Let me give a hypothetical situation., someone from India calls up canada and asks "chandresh bhaiyya., mere bete ko $$$ ka offer mila hai Canada mein., is it OK ?? " .... I dont think anyone will start discussing personal life of the beta here., he can do anything he wants here., but, is the $$$ good enough for a living ??
Fresher buddy, Iam not in canada ., so, I cant answer your question confidently., but, anyway., few guys have already answered.., that should help.., anyway,. what I have garnered from other websites., 50-60 is a good salary to start with ., 50-40 is OK., OK kind... but managable if single.., if moving with family something more than 50-60 is good. Enjoy maadi !!!

Hi Kdevaneson,

That's what I understood and replied without arguing "if / buts" and regardless of personal choice.;)

I agree with you and KD in total, what was so complicated about the original post on this thread.
Decent Salary 30 -40K, after a year savings can purchase house too......
But I understood Chandresh too, he is one good person and did explain his grounds which I feel a lot people dont care to do.......

I also gree with Chandresh and his explanations. But, at times we should try to understand the general situations and try to avoid it become specific. That is what I see now. From a general question of "Decent Salary" , now it is going in detail to a specific salary for a specific job with # of years of experience etc. This thread is getting lengthy now and also bringing some sort of frustation and confrontation among CD members.

In my humble opinion Moderators should avoid these situations or atleast should not be a part of such type of situations. It could affect popularity of this great site.

Chandresh,

A simple Q like what is decent salary? Ans is 30 - 40K, what is achievable. If few people get salaries more than 40K is good for them. If you ans 40K does not restrict the person from aiming for salaries more than 40K. There are time when you have to be general in your replies. Some time assumptions play a good amount of role.
You are satisfied with 30K (decent salary) but you deserve 80K (is your worth) Some people are able to get what they deserve but general experience is what make a decent salary.
I am out of this discussion now............................

There are diffferences in the adjectives decent/worth/survivable.

IMHO, the words decent and worth are very personal in nature while survivable is a generic term.

A person might be worth say 80k (and mind you, worth is decided by the buyer and not the seller - that means the general public has to decide what a person is worth, and not the person himself).

The same person can survive (be able to live and be provided with Roti, kapda aur Makan) with 30k-50k depending on the size of family, ages of family members because those two factors will decide how much roti, kapda and makan + healthcare is needed.

Decent salary for him - well that is PURELY his judgement and no outsider enters into determining that figure. If he judges himself to be worth 125 k, a 100 k salary which is above the survivable figure, as well as above his worth as judged by others is NOT going to be considered decent by him. However, if he thinks he is worth 50k and gets 60 k, even though it is lower than his actual worth, will be considered more than decent by him (and perhaps not decent by others since they find him worth 80k).

Once again, what you might consider as decent (between 40-50k), is purely from your perspective, your situation and your demands. In my opinion, if a professional has been accepted as a desireable person by immigration Canada and who decides to leave everything he has grown up with and come to Canada, nothing below 60k would be decent. Yet, my niece, who was once thinking of migrating to Canada, when visited Canada to judge for herself, decided against migrating - because in her opinion, an income of 50k would not be decent for her (since she makes around 40k in India at present).

I hope I am able to convey what I mean.

Chandresh

Perhaps it could be my last post on this subject as it has been very lengthy. I viewed it like Fresher asked a very general question which could have a very general first hand reply. This general question since then became a debatable issue.

However, decent salary is undoubtedly a personal choice based on various factors and can keep on changing time to time for a person himself. (Example of Chnadresh... Chandreshji do not mind). But, at the same time while reading a post one should use one self’s natural instinct and should not make it personal like some honorable members have been doing and quoting their personal examples of age, qualification, experience and expectation. If one personalizes it then it is not a decent salary in general but once expected salary or dream salary.

Some members have been quoting figures from 70-80 to 100-120K and more. How many jobs are there in Canada ranging in these figures? Some members know some of their friends who are getting this much pay. Good thing. But how many are there getting this much pay? I ask a simple question - Ok dear, you know 10 persons getting 80 to 120K or more. Fine. It is their luck or they grabbed an opportunity at right time. But how many are out there getting 30-60K whom you know personally but did not talk about quoting decent salary here in Canada.

Come on friends, be realistic and practical. Dreaming is good that keeps you alive and encourages achieving the target. Day dreaming is not well. General questions should have a general reply which immediately comes up in mind. Do not drag a small post in a lengthy discussions.:(
