Hello
I am Mahesh Khatri, Photographer and Videographer fromIndian moving in the 1st week of May to Toronto along with family i.e myself, wife and two children.
I need guidance as to the scope of my business over there and possibilities of starting my own freelancing business catering to corporates, TV and film as also weddings. I have over 18 years of experience
Do I need to take licence for that.
Secondly I need to book a place for staying in the initial stages as soon as we arrive.
Since I dont know anyone I need guidance as to what to do as soon as we land over there.
Also should I bring my computers over there or should I purchase from there. I am also into hardware, so I can change the powersuppy. Will the rest configuration work. Also the software part. Should I bring it from here. Most of them are not licenced.
As to clothing, what to purchase and what not to.
pls guide.
I would appreciate if any one of youll could help arrange accomodation before we come and tell the cost involved.
Any other valuable advise on anything else most welcome.

Hello Mahesh,
Congratulations on your immigration to this land of opportunities.
I don't believe that you need any special licence to carry out your profession here. Till such time that you start your own business here, I suggest you to post you resume on Workopolis.com and Monster.ca to guage the response on the possibilities of your employment.
In regards to your stay, temporary staying arrangements can be made directly at PORTS HOTEL located in Mississauga (www.portshotel.ca). There are other guest houses as well that offer similar accomodation. Check links available on "Business" or "Immigration" tabs on this website.
Regarding computers, they are available cheap here... check for prices of configurations on http://www.mdg.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK, http://www.staples.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK , http://www.futureshop.com" rel="nofollow">LINK and http://www.bestbuycanada.com" rel="nofollow">LINK . These are big stores that offer competitive prices on branded computers. Clones are available cheaper at other stores. After checking the prices, you maybe able to decide whether you should bring your compter or buy one here. I belive, the indian monitors don't work here inspite of being able to run between 110-240V. I can't comment on the software you possess and leave it to you to decide.
It is getting warmer here but still quite cold for someone coming from warmer climate. I suggest that you carry a few long-johns to be worn under trousers. You probably would need them in the next winters. A jacket would be sufficient from May onwards. Sweaters are not worn much here, but if you have them, bring one with you anyway for occassional need. You will have to buy new jackets close to next winter here as Indian jackets usually are not made for this climate.
If you need any further help, you can contact me once you have arrived at my contact information given below.
Good Luck,

Thanks a ton for useful information
I checked at Portshotel site. It is quite good.
But it would be still better if you could help book a basement place with 2 bedrooms as I suppose it is mandatory for family with 2 children.
That way I feel it would be cheaper.
As of software I wanted to know if there would be a problem if I bring them there. Regular software like operating system software and graphics software.
Thanks once again
Hi Mahesh,
You can get basement accomodation but you have to be here for it. The price difference between an apartment and 2 bedroom bsmt apt would be about 200 or so. You can either book youself for a week in Ports Hotel or try these too http://www.torontorooms4u.com/ and http://www.sunnynewcomer.com/
Re software, it is entirely up to you. OS comes with the branded system here and is included in the price. Other software is expensive.

Basement apartment are in the basemaent of private owners. So, you will have to come here , select them & take it from owner.Owner ask for 2 month deposit ( first & last). getting a basemant is not a problem at all. You go to any mall, you will find lot of ads for basement. if you are in mississauga/brampton most of the ownwers are desis.
If you don't anybody here , first you will have to stay in some hotel/motel & than book basement apartment. Cost will be around 800-900 but you can get rental apartment for around 1000-1100. getting a apartment/basemaent is no problem at all.
Regarding your profession we have lot of desi photographer/videographer here. either you can attach with them or you can start your own bussiness. but for starting your own bussiness you need money to get some office + ads etc. papers. may be around 100k CAD.
Good Luck.

Are you there?
Also I would like to know the chances of working with TV, Channels as a director of photography, Videography, Camera operator. I have experience in making documentaries, few episodes of serials, TV Shows, Corporate films, TPM audits and more.
Will the DEMO of my work suffice to gain entry in these fields or do I need to go for some Professional short term film making course or like to qualify working there.
Also maybe becoming member of some professional body will suffice.
Any guidance as to where to start hunting for such assignments there?
I would be more interested in freelancing rather than taking a job.
Pls guide
Thanks
