You are not getting rent receipts because the landlord does not want to show rental income, as is the case most often than not, unfortunately.
I do believe your question was answered, but I just want to digress.
Just for your information, the CRA is very scrupulous and will get to the bottom of unreported income, it's just a matter of when. So if you are in the situation where you have unreported income, you should take advantage of the voluntary disclosure program. If you come clean of your own accord, before the CRA launches an investigation, you may be able to avoid penalties altogether if it is a valid disclosure.
Something to look into...

Many of the Landlords are not that smart. See where you got the lead for the basement rental. They normally post a sheet with a few details and a phone number or street address etc., (Might not have the name of that individual.) some even provide a dollar figure.
Ask the landlord, before you leave or go to the same location where he posted his AD. Take the whole AD and keep it as evidence for your Taxes. You got to know where they make a SLIP. Nail that 'bun of a sitch' and now you have him by his balls.
See if this helps. You can even wait for Three years to see where he will be posting it go there and uproot it off the wall or the bulletin board and then work your claim backwards. There are other means too and you will learn then as time progresses. That is by recording a conversation with him asking for the basement rental. He knows you and your voice, so, use a friend to do the asking.
Good Luck.
FH.
