If you do not have a receipt, I would not claim the credits . What if CRA asked you to send the receipts for the rent . Your landlord *may* not be able to give you anything if he is not showing the basement suite on his tax returns ..
I would not do anything that is not true .
My 2 cents

We will find a way or we will make one
Talk to your landlord, and see if he/she is willing to give you a receipt.
As regards claiming your family, technically you cannot claim them.

I stayed in a basement for 1 year, when i was leaving the basement i asked for rent receipt ,but they refuse to give me and said we can't give you otherwise we will be in a big problem.
Now what should i do ? if i'll show the rent receipt i will get around 1400 return which is huge money for me.but my ex land lord is refusing to give ?
should i apply tax return with receipt or should take some legal action..
plz plz advice urgently..
If you have paid rent using Cheque than you are covered. You can still show that as you paid rent and you should be able to claim in tax return.
Thank you,
