Hi,

I came to Canada in January 2003. I have been able to score a job. Now I want to sponsor my parents. How long one should wait or be in canada before he should sponsor his parents?

-1. how long should one wait (Approx. time ) since you entered canada to sponsor parents ?
-2. how long should one wait (Approx. time) since I got a job in my field to sponsor parents ?

Thanks for advice / tips

For sponcering parents only criteria is your income. There is no such waiting time, but you can know your income only after you complete one year. The proofs for income can be T4 or your income tax accessment.

You must be earning enough to support your existing family in Canada plus number of people you are sponcering (if only parents then 2). For Toronto I think it is 42,000 Cd$ per year is required for family of 6 (including parents)

You can show your spouses income also.

I have the same question but my situation is a bit different. I have a job in USA since AUG 2002. I am planning to drive to and fro (from Windsor to Detroit) and continue working in USA (from Feb 2004).

[1] How early can i sponsor my parents ?
[2] How much time it takes for their application to process ?

Thanks,
Absy

Parents-Family class takes about 1 yr now. CHC is bit strict on their medicals.

Depending on the city you live in, you have to prove adequate income to support them.

Main issue with having parents is:

do you have a seperate room for them?
are you able to take them to clinics since they won't be driving??
would they be OK with the harsh winter here??
would they be OK if they are stuck in the house for weeks??
would they be OK if they are uanble to visit religious places for long time??

There are so many small things which carry no importance but turns out to be depressing for oldies going to a foreign land for the first time.

guju: small correction to your post. Min. Income cut-off for sponsoring parents NO LONGER depends on 'the city you live in'. It's the same wherever you live in Canada.

No need to wait one year or even for income tax as long as you can show you meet the family minimum income [husband & wife]. The size of the family determines the family income amount. Please see http://www.passportcanada.com/lico.php

If at the time of application you do not meet the income requirement, your application will be refused and you MAY win on appeal [depends on many factors]. Appeal takes approx. 8 months & costs money. So, best is to sponsor when you meet the income figures if possible.

If winter is a concern, then move to Vancouver. You won't be stuck in the house for weeks [not even for days]. It's sunny out here today. But don' expect California ... ;)

Mr. Masood,

Thanks for your reply. But i will be working in USA. I would like to be able to sponsor my parents based on my US income since AUG 2002.

Please share your suggestions in this matter.
