BASIC TELEPHONE CONNECTION.
Hi, friends,June 17,05.
I am new in Toronto. And stay in a bachelor's apartment.I am from India.
Would like to know which is the most economical telephone service/connection available in Dufferin/Bloor area of GTA?
And also the most economical link/website /address to purchase a computer for connecting to the net?
Just inform the company and they will connect/hook up a phone line?
Ans what about the telephone handset?Does the company provide or one has to buy it?
Pl.advise/inform.

Since you are staying in a bachelor's apartment and may be moving from here to some where else after some time, you should go for cell phone instead of landline as you would save the money in installation, buying a handset and then paying moving charges later, if you move to other residence. Moreover, even the basic landline would cost you atleast $28-$30 per month without the call display or call waiting. If you take call display, you might end up paying more than $35 per month including taxes.
In comparison, if you take a cell phone either from FIDO or TELUS who are offering unlimited incoming calls in $25 per month your monthly bill with taxes would be under $40 and you will have the phone for all time, even when you are not at home. It would also come in handy if you apply for the job and the interviewer can always contact you at the cell phone.
Now a days most of the people here only take cell phones and do not even bother for the landline.
You might have to sign for a contract though and you might get the phone for free. The only problem could be your not having any credit rating but you can still try.
So, compare the benefits and then decide.

Hi, friends,June 17,05.
You do not have to put in your date. That gets picked with the time of your posting. Just look at the left bottom your post.
I would suggest that you go in for a high speed internet connection and get a Primus 'Talk broadband' line. High speed net would be about $45 and primus talk broadband basic is about $15. Pay them another $3 and you get 300 minutes of long distance. So that's $63. thats much better than paying $40 for a mobile and worry (about the bills) when making outgoing calls. And buy a message recorder for $20 - $ 40 to get the messages when not home. Suggest not to go in for a mobile or wireless as thay call it here. The signal strength is not so good (call drop is frequent if you are inside a building ) and the plans basically rip you off. India was much better as far as mobile plans go.
You have to buy your own instrument. So if you have a cordless one at home, get it here. Here you can get a basic cordless (GE or equivalent) for $20 and above.

Mobile/wireless services in India are a ripoff too. There is no comparison with the great deals in the US for cell phone use, however it seems service and options in Canada are improving.
