I have heard that customs do not allow pickles to be carried by people travelling to US. Is it so with Canada also?

I don't think this is a rule - but you have to have things packed well.
Pickles are available in Toronto in much more variety than you will find in India, so why bother about brining them from India?

The restriction is against importing fresh produce (fruits, vegetables), plants etc. Processed food should not be a problem, unless the customs guys do not suspect something else in it.
But like G.G. said, why should you?
