Hi,
I came to canada in Aug 2004.I had filed my tax return in Canada and have got the tax refund. Now I have received a letter from CRA asking me about my income in 2004 while I was not in Canada(that is prior to Aug 04) for GST/HST credits.
That letter states:

"Please supply us with the follwoiung information , we will review it and inform you of the result:
A statement of income, with the maount reported in Canadian Dollars, for the period in 2004 when you were not a resident of Canada"

I was in india and Jan to Mar 2004 would come under 2003-2004 financnial year and Apr-Aug will come under 2004-2005 financial year as per indian govt rules.

So what do I need to send to CRA.Should I send them my form 16(TDS form- Tax deduction at source form) for both the financial years or from the 2004-2005 financial year only. Or do I need to send any other documents as a proof.

Please guide.

Thanks,
Mani

This information is required by them to calculate your GST credit. People who have children and apply for CTB provide them this information at the time of filling the form for CTB. However, people who are single or not applying for CTB can fill the form RC 151 which can be downloaded from CRA's website and sent to them so that they can calulate your GST credits.

Here is the link to download this form and the form is self explanatory:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu/AFAF_R-e.html

I hope it helps.

CTB is Child Tax Benefit, not applicable to you.

If you download the form and read it, you will find that it is self-explanatory and you do not have to provide any proof. Here in Canada, the Government and the Agency trust you and ask you to provide the information and certify that the information you provided is true. You can go on that website and you would also find the mean rate for Rupee to Canadian Dollar conversion and use the same to covert your Indian income. Still if you have any doubts, you will find their contact number wherein you can call them and they will give you all the info.

Good luck.
