Hi,
I lived in Canada for more than 3 years as Permanent Resident and paid taxes as I was working in USA by that time on H1B visa.
I also applied for Canadian Citiznship in March 2009 and my US Green Card came in June 2009 and I moved to USA.
I filed my Canadian Taxes for 2008 as I lived partly in Canada in 2008.
But I did not live in Canada in year 2009, but still has Canadian PR Card. Do I have to file taxes in Canada even when I have no intent to going back to Canada.
My understaning was that I don't have to file taxes in Canada as I am not living in Canada anymore.
Even I am going to cancel my Canadian Citizenship application.
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Anurag
Anurag,
If you do not have any cdn source income (including bank interest) AND if you did not live in Canada during that year (these are the main criteria), you can declare yourself as a cdn NR for Tax Purpose for that year and are not required to file taxes. I hope you do not have any property in Canada and do not have any strong ties to Canada such as immediate family (spouse/kids) living in Canada and (in which case you are considered as a cdn resident for tax purpose).
Why are you canceling your citizenship application? Was it turned down by the judge?
