One important thing I've done in my interviews in the past (after the school of hard knocks). Ask questions e.g:
1) What are the future plans of the company. New products etc( do your research into what the company does before hand)
2) What is the average retention rate of the company?
3) What are the chances of growth in the company? What are the other avenues of growth available within the companyb etc.?
However, you may not want to look too agressive. If you feel the interviewer is not being responsive you may want to lay off a bit. However in all the interviews I have used this method, I've always got an offer. It is difficult to bring yourself to ask questions when you are desperate. However, remember that everybody likes a good bargain. Part of making yourself look like a good deal is to not look desperate. Make them think that you are also checking them out. Almost always the interviewer is happy to be the one who is answering, rather than asking questions. Remember that many people find conducting interviews stressfull too. They are glad for anything that can make it less so. In any case your asking questions will almost always create a positive atmosphere.
I've had my share of labor jobs too. The article 'The biggest Battles' on this site will give you some more details of the same. Last month I started my own production company in pursuit of my dreams of making films. One short film to be released next month, one proposal under consideration by the NFB of Canada and another major project in the works. After 7 years of arriving in Canada. There IS hope!!
Chandresh, hang in there. I have known of people get a break even after 8 years. You will make it.

Your story is not uncommon.FYI, I have a similiar background, having worked in Europe (UK,Hungary), SE Asia (Singapore,Philippines) and India.I too have had to struggle to secure a job....But I am surprised that Accountemps did not help you? Try PTC Staffing?
Pl forward your resume to me,if something comes up,I will give you a call.

Good discussion point.
I too fortunate like BL for not doing any labor or odd job. So from me nothing to report on this subect.
The story of Chandresh is really depressing, but that's a reality. I don't know, but I had impresson that people having accounting background can get job in their field sooner or letter. But it seems after reading chandresh's story that it is not true always.
May be the entry level temp jobs always lends in hands of while (or black) ladies. In my company I can see accounting staff. All doing mistakes everyday and evey minute. I gave few resumes to out accounting manager, but they were never converted into interviews - and all of them were good accountants backhome.
So where is the truth?

DIE HARD !
My bro-in-law(younger sister's hubby) who is M.COM, CA from M S Uni of Baroda arrived here 3 yrs back. Before coming here he held senior mgt position in swedish co. called ABB(asea brown boveri) where he achieved expertise in SAP/R3 implementation and other international acctg standards.
He wanted to requalify as a canadian CA. He applied at all the CA firms in GTA which were approved by CA body. No luck. Hence, he gave up CA.
Next choice was CGA. With his indian CA and good exp. he got exemptions upto level 4 CGA. He was asked to give some competition exams which got rid of some papers in level 4 &5. Finally, he has to write exam for 4 papers and that will give him CGA.
On other hand, he got registered with all the acctg. agencies in GTA. It was Account temps who worked hard for him, found contractual jobs(1,2 or3 months) in a row at different well-known companies. Finally, they managed to get him 1yr contract which lead to a full time perm job. Right now he is getting all the benefits, the co. is paying all his CGA fees, the entire management is very impressed by his SAP skills. Infact he is teaching SAP stuff to his bosses. Accounttemps calls him even now to see if he is looking for a change.
Bottom line is he could manage to get into his field due to his SAP skills. His Indian CA or multinational job exp. was kinda useless.
He should become a CGA by 2004 end.
I was under impression that acctg/fin people didn't have to undergo hardships as engg/mktg people do.
After reading chandresh's story, it seems that my bro-in-law is an exception. He just lucked out.

A Proud Indian Canadian
My story is not interesting as others. First of all, I did not have to start anything from scratch here. I came under family class. Most of my family members have settled in Europe and N.America for last 40 yrs. I have lived, worked and studied in India, Europe(mostly France) and canada. I have travelled most of the parts of the world. Apart from BS and MBA, I've studied networking /communications/solaris unix.
I am in late 30s now and kinda settled down with family. Although I prefer outdoor jobs, I wanted to get a less hasslefree indoor job. Through some referral, I got into bank. I think they found everything in me. It's been 5 yrs now at the same place. I joined as pre-management and after year and half got into management cadre. It is canada's biggest bank and I am into merchant business solutions.
I have not experienced any layoffs, but have seen lots of downsizing and restructuring.
Life goes on..........
My elder sister is the only person left in India who did not want to come earlier and now that she is interested, her file is in limbo for last 2yrs.
