One important thing I've done in my interviews in the past (after the school of hard knocks). Ask questions e.g:
1) What are the future plans of the company. New products etc( do your research into what the company does before hand)
2) What is the average retention rate of the company?
3) What are the chances of growth in the company? What are the other avenues of growth available within the companyb etc.?
However, you may not want to look too agressive. If you feel the interviewer is not being responsive you may want to lay off a bit. However in all the interviews I have used this method, I've always got an offer. It is difficult to bring yourself to ask questions when you are desperate. However, remember that everybody likes a good bargain. Part of making yourself look like a good deal is to not look desperate. Make them think that you are also checking them out. Almost always the interviewer is happy to be the one who is answering, rather than asking questions. Remember that many people find conducting interviews stressfull too. They are glad for anything that can make it less so. In any case your asking questions will almost always create a positive atmosphere.
I've had my share of labor jobs too. The article 'The biggest Battles' on this site will give you some more details of the same. Last month I started my own production company in pursuit of my dreams of making films. One short film to be released next month, one proposal under consideration by the NFB of Canada and another major project in the works. After 7 years of arriving in Canada. There IS hope!!
Chandresh, hang in there. I have known of people get a break even after 8 years. You will make it.

Chandresh:

Your story is not uncommon.FYI, I have a similiar background, having worked in Europe (UK,Hungary), SE Asia (Singapore,Philippines) and India.I too have had to struggle to secure a job....But I am surprised that Accountemps did not help you? Try PTC Staffing?

Pl forward your resume to me,if something comes up,I will give you a call.

Best of luck

Sathish:cheers: ;)

Good discussion point.

I too fortunate like BL for not doing any labor or odd job. So from me nothing to report on this subect.

The story of Chandresh is really depressing, but that's a reality. I don't know, but I had impresson that people having accounting background can get job in their field sooner or letter. But it seems after reading chandresh's story that it is not true always.

May be the entry level temp jobs always lends in hands of while (or black) ladies. In my company I can see accounting staff. All doing mistakes everyday and evey minute. I gave few resumes to out accounting manager, but they were never converted into interviews - and all of them were good accountants backhome.

So where is the truth?

My bro-in-law(younger sister's hubby) who is M.COM, CA from M S Uni of Baroda arrived here 3 yrs back. Before coming here he held senior mgt position in swedish co. called ABB(asea brown boveri) where he achieved expertise in SAP/R3 implementation and other international acctg standards.
He wanted to requalify as a canadian CA. He applied at all the CA firms in GTA which were approved by CA body. No luck. Hence, he gave up CA.
Next choice was CGA. With his indian CA and good exp. he got exemptions upto level 4 CGA. He was asked to give some competition exams which got rid of some papers in level 4 &5. Finally, he has to write exam for 4 papers and that will give him CGA.
On other hand, he got registered with all the acctg. agencies in GTA. It was Account temps who worked hard for him, found contractual jobs(1,2 or3 months) in a row at different well-known companies. Finally, they managed to get him 1yr contract which lead to a full time perm job. Right now he is getting all the benefits, the co. is paying all his CGA fees, the entire management is very impressed by his SAP skills. Infact he is teaching SAP stuff to his bosses. Accounttemps calls him even now to see if he is looking for a change.
Bottom line is he could manage to get into his field due to his SAP skills. His Indian CA or multinational job exp. was kinda useless.
He should become a CGA by 2004 end.

I was under impression that acctg/fin people didn't have to undergo hardships as engg/mktg people do.
After reading chandresh's story, it seems that my bro-in-law is an exception. He just lucked out.

Well I am Civil Engineer by study and software professional by work (over 14 years). I rarely worked for big companies, but having experience of working with US based company's head-quarter at India.

When I landed in Canada, I had job with my previous company (in the US) I worked from Canada for a while and the company wanted me to join them in the US. However my family liked Toronto and so I decided to stay here. After a small search of about 15 days (and three interviews) I got a job with one start-up b2b company with big title "Director of Technology". Unfortunately that job last only 3.5 months as the company closed it operations (not because of me ;) )

Then again I started looking for job and got the current one after 25 days of job search and 3 interviews.

Following points went in favor of me:

1. Confidence, Smiling face and humor. (These guys likes humor very much, if you don't have anything to say, but if your interviews jokes on something just laugh loudly - no kidding, it always works. Though I don't have a strong English vocabulary, I can manage to say something...)

2. Ability to steer the interview. I don't know how to explain this properly, but usually with job postings there are some skills mentioned. Study those, study about the company and then you should have ideas for what this position is for. Now evaluate your own skills and wherever you are strong in - just focus on that and try to steer it in that direction. Recent trends in the industries will also help you to impress the interviews - things like Is .NET going to replace java... etc.

3. No lies in the resume. Whatever was there in the resume, I knew each and every topics well. This is important.

4. Clear English Pronunciations.

5. Ability to understand any spoken English. (How to cultivate this? Not easy...)

5. Canadian Manners. Calling someone with his first name (You also need to know that David is know as Dave, Michael is Mike, Thomas is Tom and so on) Start with weather - talk that you are not used to so cold weather as you are coming from India (during Winter) and in Summer say this is nothing for you - I have lived under 47 degrees.... Thanking the interviewer, thanking the receptionist etc...

I had few other points as well.

Hands on experience with current technologies. Having experience with US Company and having work experience with Canadian Project in India.

However nobody asked be the famous question: "Do you have Canadian Experience?" Not even the recruiters.

What should be the reason?

My story is not interesting as others. First of all, I did not have to start anything from scratch here. I came under family class. Most of my family members have settled in Europe and N.America for last 40 yrs. I have lived, worked and studied in India, Europe(mostly France) and canada. I have travelled most of the parts of the world. Apart from BS and MBA, I've studied networking /communications/solaris unix.
I am in late 30s now and kinda settled down with family. Although I prefer outdoor jobs, I wanted to get a less hasslefree indoor job. Through some referral, I got into bank. I think they found everything in me. It's been 5 yrs now at the same place. I joined as pre-management and after year and half got into management cadre. It is canada's biggest bank and I am into merchant business solutions.
I have not experienced any layoffs, but have seen lots of downsizing and restructuring.
Life goes on..........
My elder sister is the only person left in India who did not want to come earlier and now that she is interested, her file is in limbo for last 2yrs.
