The Recycle bin
------------------------
Beneath the velvety sheen of Bollywood films, lies a hollowness, that is wanton of
foolproof scripts, that can mask its visible flaws. While the technicalities have been mastered,
or lifted(?), they seem to dominate the domain, rather than enhance the quality of the final product.
Photography, editing, locales, costumes, are areas which have outshone each other,
but the basic script, which is the backbone of any film, neither gets the corner seat nor the back seat..!!
In desperation, storylines are repeated, old classics are remade, and in this tiring process,
top stars are chosen to add value to the final package.
In reality, the script, if woven intelligently, should elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary.
Accessories like camera, costume and locale should be dictated by the storyline.
Indeed, an actor who has gained charisma, could hike up the interest value in a film,
nevertheless, the whole burden of making an impact with the film, should not rest on the
their delicate shoulder's..!!
In this fast food venture, music is replicated and lyrics lose their sheen. Costumes are an eyesore
and the dance numbers are like ones churned out in a factory - repetitive and stale..!!
Excessive triangles and rectangles in a love story, which fail to rouse any passion,
numerous underworld related storylines, with mindless violence, which does not induce fear anymore, humorless screenplays marketed as comedies, which fail to amuse,.....the list is unending..!
The dearth of a healthy script, leads to -
the remake of hit oldies, with the new stars - old wine in a dingy bottle
grabbing everyday incidents from newspaper headlines, to be recycled as scripts underlined with reality, making a mockery of yesteryear freedom fighters,....
is there an end..??
Commercial entertainers derive their strength from pure fiction and the product comes alive in the hands of the scriptwriter. It is he who spins the yarn, which has to be strong enough to hold
the viewer's rapt attention. Remixing the age old ingredients and reshuffling the oft seen stars, results in a stale product, ready to be tossed in the bin...!!!
No wonder, we struggle to identify any of these potboilers, to represent India in Oscars..!!
Will we ever rise out of the ordinary..??
