Keep in mind the landline being offered by Rogers is a VOIP too. Rogers will not openly admit that. My neighbour works for Rogers Telecom, and he mentioned that to me. Infact I've seen it at someones place, and it's hooked up to the cable line. All the guy did was call up Rogers and ask for a landline, and that's what Rogers did.

Rogers offers both regular home phone (erstwhile Sprint) and VOIP. Lines and techs are from Bell for regular home phone.

What makes me wonder is where would they hide the modem required to covert signals from cable to phone if they say they say they are providing regular phone and instead provide VOIP.

The guy living in my basement got one installed recently. He asked for a regular line. The modem is right in my basement. I talked to the technician when he came to instal it. He said Sprint used to lease lines from Bell, we are getting away from that practice since we have the cable infrastructure. I then checked with my neighbour and he confirmed that it is infact a VOIP.

When I checked, ww.primus.ca, they say that they give the landline with unlimited calls to US and Canada for $54.95. Is it reliable? How is the quality?

Thanks.

I have this deal. As far as voice quality goes, I've never had an issue. Its quite reliable.

The thing I've noticed about Primus is its great till it works. If however something breaks down and you need to call customer service, Good luck! I've had some terrible experiences with Primus's customer service and am thinking about switching to someone else for that reason. The issue is excacerbated by the fact that everytime some repair work needs to be done, they need to contract a Bell technician.

The quality and price have been good however. So you call, if you want to go for a regular land-line and are able to put up with occassional frustration, go for them.

Hi all,

Thank for your replies.

BlueLobster: I don't think I can break my head with them. How about Rogers?

Thanks.

Raajen, if you are moving from the US, you might want to try Primus (Lingo) from the US - we had Lingo in the US before we moved here and we continue to use the same service here in Canada. Its just US$19.95 pm for unlimited calling in USA, Canada and 17 countries in Western Europe. (www.lingo.com) You can also get a secondary number for just $5/mth - so you can keep your US local number and get a Canadian number (TO or Van only). You cannot start this service from Canada as they need a US Address and a US Credit card for payment. Your only problem in Canada will be unavailability of 911 service - as a 911 call will get your US address. We still use our US Credit card and pay it off from our US Bank Account.

I've never used their home line. My cell service is Rogers though. I've had it ever since I came to Canada and have been pretty satisfied.
