I am in the process of applying for PR as a skilled worker..at the same time I have been admitted to a univ for MBA this Fall. To qualify for domestic fees, a PR is a must.
Now from any of your experiences or prior knowledge, does applying for one affect the other or vice versa? Also, should I include my letter of admission while submitting the PR app (in the hope that they process it faster so I can qualify for domestic fees, or maybe to support my English proficiency) ?
Any input is welcome.
i forgot to add - the skilled worker is for engineering which is in contrast to study permit for MBA
This is Mr. Massood's column. Till he finds time:
aru123, maybe you are mixing up two issues.
PR application would normally take 4 to 5 years to clear.
To check average time taken, please see this link:

So if you have an admission letter, apply for a student permit and as your reach Canada apply for PR as soon as you attain necessary points.
well i forgot to mention that I am in the US - it dosen't take that long as u have mentioned...i want to apply for both from here
While student visa will take only few weeks; time taken at Buffalo office for PR is given as follows:
Processing Times at Buffalo:
30% of cases finalized in: 19 months;
50% of cases finalized in: 27 months;
70% of cases finalized in: 36 months;
80% of cases finalized in: 43 months;
It is clear that applying for PR will take you beyond this fall.
If I were you I would apply first for student visa and once it is stamped on my passport, then I would apply for PR.
Best of luck.
The study permit [student visa] does not help in accelerating the processing time. It only helps you file your application in the US. It won't help you establish language proficiency either. For language proficiency, you have to either tale a prescribed language test [celpip or ielts] or make written submissions about a variety of things to support your claimed fluency level.
Good luck.

thanks to both of you for your responses - but I am still not clear on this - will applying for PR as a skilled worker in engineering while applying for study permit for MBA, create any problems? I mean intended current field of work is different from intended study (and hence future field of work).
Masood - you mentioned that getting a study permit helps in filing the PR app from US - but I don't see how if I am applying in the skilled worker category? Or am i missing something?
LD, thats good info regd processing times, but from what I have seen others who got approved last year, it has been less than 18 months, and sometimes even 10..? My guess is that probably the ones who got approved faster submitted all documents upfront?
