I have been accepted at University of Windsor for 4-year Computer Science Honors Program for Fall 2008 as a transfer student . Out of 4 years, 1 year of courses have transferred to University. I am currently studying in college in India .I will be applying for study permit next week. I have few questions regarding study permit which are as follows.

1. The total estimated fees for full 1 year at Windsor univ is 23000 CAD(12000 cad for tuition and 10000 cad for living expenses) which is equivalent to around 10 lacs. I have read that although visa office asks you to show expenses for 1 year but you have to show more than that to get study permit. I can show liquid asset of maximum of 17 lacs plus have solid assets of more than 50 lacs. Both of my parents are in govt of India and they have an annual income of around 8 lacs. Now my questions is whether the funds are sufficient for study permit and do I have to apply for loan(and it will be difficult too as it is quite late) and I have to leave at the end of august for fall term.

2. How can I show "strong ties" to India for study permit ?

3. After how much time can I expect to get my letter of confirmation (if it gets approved)?

4. Do I have to go for counseling for study permit(like from CEC India etc) ?

5. What will be the total fees for applying for study permit and Temporary Resident Visa?

Thnx in Advance.

Hi rPs,
Here are some answers for your questions. They are not in any order.

http://settlement.org/site/FP/home.asp
http://settlement.org/discuss/topic.asp?FORUM_ID=24&TOPIC_ID=10148
http://settlement.org/sys/link_redirect.asp?doc_id=1001433

Fees and Support: Funds : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp#doc3

This is what you will receive in the mail as a response from the Immigration Department. : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-after.asp

What you will need at the time of arrival: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-arriving.asp

IMPORTANT : Disclosure of funds.
If you arrive in Canada with more than C$10,000, you must disclose this information to the CBSA officer. If you do not disclose this information, you could be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:
* cash
* securities in bearer form (for example, stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills) or
* negotiable instruments in bearer form, such as bankers’ drafts, cheques, traveller’s cheques or money orders.

You pledge your assets and get an approval letter with the available amount in Rupees or equivalent in Dollars, show the proof of all of the available assets and future support and a commitment from the Parents for studies, it will satisfy the Immigration Officer. You will need liquid cash for the first year of studies and stay. I have provided you with some links to accommodations at the bottom of the page.

Processing times : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/14-temp-students.asp

When you land here as a student they will stamp your Passport with a TRV, which will resemble like this : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5552E2.asp

Strong ties to the Country of Origin : Religious, cultural, Local Associations and Affinity group. etc.,
Religion : Get a letter from your Local Temple Management that your family has been devotees or you are one amongst their groups.
Cultural Associations: Get a letter from your local group that you are a member of that group.( or that chapter, or branch that you belong to.)
Local Associations. If your family has a business and runs one or your Parents are members of the Govt. Employees, then get a letter saying that they are part of that Group. You have taken part in their activities.
Affinity Group : Educational: Ex- Students Association, Or Student Member of ..
AMIE or any such group if you have not done so already.

All of this takes time. But if you do not have an opportunity to complete all of these, please make a statement, that you are the only child and your presence will be required back home after the completion of studies etc., as a support to the aging Parents.

https://services3.cic.gc.ca/efee/efee.do
Study Permit : $125.00
""Incorrect payments:
If you have sent insufficient fees or incorrect form of payment, we will return your application with instructions. You must then pay the additional fees and mail everything back to us. This will delay the processing of your application. If you have overpaid, we will refund the overpayment. We will issue a cheque as soon as possible.""

I have given you a lot of information to read and understand, then assimilate all of these in a very short time.

To make it more concise, if you have about 80 Lakhs of Rupees and you have all of these understood and the Application ready, you can be on your way by the end of July of 2008. It will also take you anywhere from 8 - 10 days to get the travel arrangements done, AFTER the receipt of the Passport and the stamping done. Only you know how ready you are to take this plunge.

If you have any more questions ( I don't think you will) please ask the board.

Good Luck.

Freddie.

Hi rPs,

Here is a good opportunity for a brilliant student to make his ends meet with a seat into Co-Op Program. Please see if you can get Entrance into the same before you get in. Write and ask. Or Fax and get a response.

http://www.uwindsor.ca/units/liaison/admissions/admissions2005.nsf/SubCategoryFlyOut/F79287A2382E259E852573E80067E0D2

It will help you get by here in Canada. You will get a very good salary for the four years that you are studying here. It might cover most of the tuition costs for each and every year. You only foot the Boarding and lodging plus other sundry expenses.
(Which currently happen to be quite a bit.)

Take a shot at it.

Freddie.
