I am a bookworm as well
I enjoy reading south indian authors. Here is a link to a site that has a long list of south asian writers (mostly women).

I remember a book by Bharati Mukherjee called 'wife'. It was very good. I also liked 'interpreter of maladies" by Jhumpi Lahiri.
Brick Lane - by Monica Ali (A bangladeshi author) is very good.
Im also reading a book at present called "9 parts of desire-the hidden world of islamic women". Its very powerful , and the author who is Jewish herself is interviewing Islamic women in a few different countries and recounting their experiences.
"Born Confused" is very cute. Its about an indian-american teenager.

My reading suggestion to whoever is interested is to read "the world is flat" by Thomas Freidman.
It is a extremely educational book on the state of the world today and the direction in which we are headed .....the book is very well written and keeps the reader glued till the very end.
here is one of the lines from the book
"In China today, Bill Gates is Britney Spears. In America today, Britney Spears is Britney Spears -- and that is our problem."
Friedman remains one of my favorite journalist, i try not to miss his weekly articles.

What can be imagined, can be achieved.
Nice to see some of my favourites listed above ... have read paulo coelho's alchemist.. its one great book.
PP, i agree with you memoirs of geisha was a well written book...havent seen the movie, and dont want to either, coz somehow when u read a book and imagine it...thats how you expect the movie to be...and the movie(s) never seem to meet the expectations!
Have read "the prophet" too, but didnt like it too much...maybe it was too heavy for me.
M_R, i have heard that Mukherjee's book is good, have u read the bride by the same author?
how about robert sharma...i think he is the one who wrote "the monk who sold his ferrari" that was a good read too.

Divakaruni's latest Mistress of Spices has been made into a film with Ash. Looks like more SA writers will come into the limelight with the recent trend to make films in English with an subcontinent background.
