The creator of memorable tunes in movies like Mughal-E-Azam, Mother India, Ganga Jamuna, Baiju Bawra, Saathi - is no more.
He perhaps had guts to take the singers out of the "Saigal" mode and sing in their original voice. The composer that helped Rafi attained a memorable status in HFM.
May his soul rest in peace

I second Meghal,
May his soul rest in peace.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
Is that "Tu Ganga ki Mauj mein Dariya kinara ... ho ga milan" song made
Mohd. Rafi and Naushad both popular. To me this is the song that comes to my mind when I think about Rafi..
I beleive some of you might recollect this song.. I even remember the scene of Bharth Bhushan with a heroin in front of a lake....
My Father is going to be very upset of Naushad's loss, one of his long time favorite artist. You know our folks get to feel much when people of their period pass away one by one. I feel they develop a sort voidness...
Meghal, "Dil jal ta hein, vo jal ne dhe", is that Saigal or Mukesh forced to sing like Saigal..

Hi TK, I assume that you know who Naushad is and that you are familiar with his work and his contribution to HFM

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
Naushad Ali, 86, passed away on the 5th of May, 2006.
In his memory, I present probably his most famous song.
Based on raag Darbari, this two part number (78 rpm days!)
has traditionally been a must for every Rafi singer on the stage!
None seem to have matched the taar saptak soor Rafi touched -
not even he himself in his later renderings at baithaks and stage shows!
Yes, Mohammad Rafi often improvised on the last antra 'mehal udaas aur galiyaan sooni..' on stage. It almost always cast a magical melancholy spell on the listeners! I know! I heard him do it in
San Francisco!
But ultimately, it shall always be a Naushad creation!
o duniya ke rakhwaale!
sun dard bhare mere naale
aas-niraas ke do rango^ me^
duniya too ne sajaaee
naiya sang toofaan banaaya
milan ke saath judaaee
jaa, dekh liya harjaaee!
looT gaee mere pyaar kee nagree
ab to neer bahaale!
o duniya ke rakhwaale..!
aag banee saawan kee barkha
phool bane angaare
naagin ban gaee raat suhaanee
patthar ban gaye taare
sab TooT chuke hai^ sahaare!
jeewan apna waapas lele
jeewan dene waale!
o duniya ke rakhwaale..!
chaa^d ko Dhu^Dhe paagal sooraj
shaam ko Dhu^Dhe savera
mein bhee Dhu^Dhu^ us preetam ko
ho n sakaa jo mera
bhagawaan, bhala ho tera!
qismat phooTee, aas n TooTee
paa^v me^ paD gaye chhaale
o duniya ke rakhwaale!
mehal udaas aur galiya^ soonee^
gup-chup hai^ deewaare^
dil kyaa ujDa, duniya ujDee
rooTh gaee^ hai^ bahaare^
ham jeewan kaise guzaare^!
mandir banta, phir gir jaata
dil ko kaun sambhaale!
o duniya ke rakhwaale!
lyrics: Shakeel Badaiyuni
music: Naushad
singer: Mohammad Rafi
film: Baiju Bawra (1952)

Lead, Kindly Light!!
Even if you observe the original recording of this Song, you could find that Rafi struggled a bit in one specific sequence... And the pitch he maintained in the last part of the song keeps the listener rejoiced..
IMO, He also brought the irreplaceable talent of Lata Mangeshkar through many songs including "Bajpan ki Mohabat ko" etc.., "Chalte, Chalte, Muje koi milgaya ta"... (Some sort train whistle background)
My God!! I still remember how our seniors used to talk about all these wonderful old songs for hours and hours when they assemble in Family functions..(Tape recorders/players were rare commodity those days and Gramaphone disks were the only source for playback) Though I was just about 9-10 years those days, still some how such songs occupied thier place in my memories for ever..........
Lately, Amit Sayyani ( I believe many of us know him) used to add his comments to these songs before playing, Can't get away with such things..
