Just making a list of my favourite artists in descending orders

Male Singers

(1) Kishore Kumar
(2) Jagjit Singh - Manna Dey
(3) Suresh Wadkar - Hariharan - Shankar Maha Devan - Amit Kumar
(4) Talt Mehmood - Hemant Kumar
(5) Rafi - only when he sings for SDB
(6) Sonu Nigam - Abhijeet in new singers. Not great but they are different from crowd

At bottom - Kumar Sanu - Shabbir Kumar - Mohammed Aziz - Mahendra Kapoor

Female singers

(1) to (10) - Lata Mangeshkar
(11) Asha Bhosle
(12) Suman Kalyanpur (Her only crime was that she sounded almost like Lata)

The problem facing current singers is the high standards set by Mangeshkar sisters. Alka Yagnik or Sadhna Sargam or Kavita or Sunidhi Chauhan cannot even dream of reaching that heights. They are good singers, but have their limitations. Combined with that the quality of music.

Favourite Music Directors
(1) RD Burman
(2) SD Burman / Madan Mohan / Salil Chowdhury
(3) Jaidev / Khayyam / AR Rehman
(4) Naushad / Jatin Lalit / Shankar Jaikishan

Favourite lyricists
(1) Gulzar
(2) Sahir Ludhiyanvi / Kaifi Azmi

Rest of the group - Majrooh-Hasrat Jaipuri - Shailendra - Anand Bakshi are lyricists first and poet next.

Jaaved Akhtar is good, but I cannot forgive him for "Ek DO Teen Char" which has "Biraha ki chakki mein main pis gayee"

Interesting to note that Laxmikant Pyarelal are no-one's favourites so far in this thread, and look at the number of filmfare awards they won during their days!......I think that tells a lot about the authenticity of the so called Indian Oscars.

Compared to that RD won very few awards (Sanam Teri Kasam, Masoom and 1942), and he is every one's favourite! (Including mine)...Kuchh aur hi mazaa hai RD ke ganon mein....

My favourite albums are Teesri Manzil, Amar Prem, Kati Patang, Aap Ki Kasam, Mehbooba, Ajnabee, Mere Jeewan Sathi(O mere dil ke chain), Jawani Diwani, Khel Khel Mein, Padosan, Anamika, Parichay, Ghar, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Love Story, Masoom, All Gulzar Movies(Aandhi, Kinara,Ijazat, Khushboo), Yadon Ki Barat, Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Sholay, ........bahut saari hain kaun si likhoon, kaunsi nahin!

I think RD used Kishore's voice the best. I remember almost going into a depression the day Kishore Kumar died in 1987!

Rest later

Vishal

I think LP did great only in their first 2 movies - Parasmani and Dosti.
Dosti is of course one of the greatest all time Indian movies in terms of music.
They won not only the Filmfare, but also the President's award (so did Rafi for his rendering of Chahunga main tujhe saanj savere....)

After that LP began dishing out cheap commercial "filmi" junk.
Together with Anand Bakshi as the song writer, they made lot of popular commercial songs, but all very filmi junk.
They were literally composing songs dime a dozen.

No wonder they won the commercial Filmfare awards several times.

Compare that with the older times when even the greatest movie directors composed for less than100 movies or so.
I think Naushad has composed only for about 60 or 70 movies.
So did Madan Mohan (he did a lot of non-filmi gazals though).

Music of

The great TRIO

GULZAR - R.D.BURMAN - KISHORE Kumar (Fir wohi raat hai, Musafir hun yaron etc..)

Male voice of, (in sequence of liking)

1 Kishore Kumar
2 Kishore Kumar
3 Kishore Kumar

4 Mohd Rafi (for few songs like....Apni bhi har aah ek tufan hai, Jab bhi yeh dil udas hota hai..., Aaj mausam bada baimaan hai etc)

5 Manna Dey (Gori tori paijaniya...may be the best voice in true classical)
6 Yasu Das

From the modern talents

1 Sukhvinder (few songs shows how talented he is)
2 Sonu Nigam
3 Udit Narayan
4 Hariharan
5 Shaan
6 Abhijit Pohankar (get an album called "PIYA BANWARI"..a fusion)

Female Voice

1 Asha Bhosle
2 Lata Mangeshkar (Khelo na mere dil se, Ae mere vatan ke logo)
3 Kavita Krishnamurthy (few songs like AAJ MAIN UPAR...)
4 Sadhna Sargam (UNSUNG HEROIN..ya she is a great technical singer)
5 Chhaya Baneerjee
6 ABIDA PARVEEN (listen to an album called "KAIF"
7 Sunidhi Chauhan (she can sing anything, highly taltented, listen to the songs of CHAMELI)

If somebody get a chance, listen to a song by a young boy called "MOHAMMED VAKIL", he sang a song in TVS SAREGAMA and became the winner. The song is "DIWARE UTHANA TO HAR YUG KI".

Regards,

VJ..

Well not really....using the word \"junk\" would be a little harsh on the duo...if they churned out junk then I wonder what Bappi Lahiri did!!!

When we talk of popular music, some of LPs contributions cannot really be ignored, like....Bobby,Shor,Mehboob Ki Mehendi, Do Raste, Pathar Ke Sanam to name a few.

Numbers like Mere Dil mein aaj kya hai(Daag), Aaj Mausam bada beimaan hai (Loafer), Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga (Jeevan Mrityu), Ruk Jana Nahin (Imtehaan), Yeh Jeevan Hai (Piya Ka Ghar),

So every thing they made was not junk..was it?
