By the way, what is defined as reasonable - or rather unreasonable to be considered for duty on landing?

Oh! I had bought the laptop during March 2006, that means only 4+ months when I arrived in Canada.

thanks,

And I think it might have not been on your goods to follow list which is the only items you can bring later without paying any duties.

Correct

But then you are referring to the quantity, not type or value of an item.

Secondly, it is also dependent on your profession before coming to Canada. My friend who ran a back office to provide services , and selling some custom designed software, and wanted to start the same here, had brought in about a dozen (used) computers and did start an office here with that.

Though slightly besides the original post , but for those who have missed out to submit a list of goods to follow at the Airport and this is their 1st or subsequent landing you can still go to any of customs CBSAs office and submit a list of goods. But the list is a one shot affair. You can do it only once .

Also even if the item is on your goods to follow list I think they need it to be in your possession for at least 6 months. In case anyone has experience to the contrary , please quote.
