Dear Desis
We had landed in Toronto in July 2010. At the time of landing, we got the paperwork done for customs duty exemption, which was to be used at the time of our final move from ME.
Now we have started planning our move and was looking for the same customs duty exemption paper, and to our great horror, could not find the same!!
Need advice from the Desis as to the effect of such loss. We are plannig to move furniture, both used and new, some electronic items, household items and of course lady's best friends.
Do we have to pay duty, if yes, at what rate? Or we still can avail the exemption. We have not been to Canada since our landing, and have not moved any of our personal belongings yet.
Thanks and regards
Contact Canada Customs . Its possible they might have a copy of the 'Goods to follow list' you have declared when you landed.
The goods to follow list is retained at first port of entry, and officer can always ask for copy from initial POE, this may delay your entry to country or extra vist for check out of imported goods.
I 'll suggest following :
1. Prepare the list of items which are being imported. the list item details should match up with the one given in goods to follow list. Use your memory card :-). place it along the goods papers.
2. Send the goods to same port of entry where list was submitted first time for ease of check out.
3. Still call in advance to CBSA and enquire possible actions before hand.
4. Do not forget to procure a copy from the border officer at the time of check out for the future imports. You may also like to prepare in advance an application on plain paper to ask for copy of list.
