You sit down to dinner and the phone rings. You answer it. The caller is trying to sell you something or tell you that you've won a fabulous prize.
I worked in Outbound Call Centre. Selling does not come natural to me. And at this point of life - i can't inject it as well. I did not go to that centre after a week. It was difficult ride ... I would accept it without any fuss - If customers hangs up or says that does not want the offer. I never used to ask another Question. Thank you, and I'll call another number. I can't be Pushy.
We all have been at receiving end as well. I hate to Hang up, but 50% chance that you end up doing that. So many times 'Sorry, Thank You or No' does not work on those people.
How do you Avoid these calls?

Maharaj,
Tbis particular topic / theme was touched by me a long time back.
As for me , I just hang up. I donot want that person to waste his time or me. Before , when i was new to Canada, I was hesitant to do this but now I am much wiser.
One of my friends have delisted the phone number from the directory to avoid such calls. You could do that too.
It is a waste of time arguing with a telemarketer. Just hang up the next time.

You can register your phone number with CMA that you do not want to recieve marketing calls. I had posted the link in charcha long time back. Companies who subscribe to Candian Marketing Association will not call you then.
Edit: Found the thread, here it is http://www.canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=4752&page=1#39620
For other companies, you can ask them to remove your name from list but all do not comply. For example I keep telling Startec not to call me and they keep calling every week. I had to say to them that I have Rogers VOIP phone (which I do not) and they stop their "script".

I would like to point out though I agree with the opinion as regards to cold calling mentioned in the thread.
I would like to stress that due to this cold calling we have developed an attitude to hang up even before saying hello even though it is a proactive centre(for banks or some companies) whom we have authorized to contact us ..isnt it sad when we hang up where we gave our phone and permission willingly?
What I am trying to do personally is to identify caller in first few seconds of conversation and then if it is an unsolicited call politely excuse and then hang up.

Common guys, lets be more passionate to these call center guys!! he is doing it for a living.
I myself have worked in call center environment, it is non stop talking through out the time one works. One call is over the Automatic Computer Dialer picks up another number and puts it to your extension. One gets about 6 to 15 secs between calls. And imagine if everybody in this world is like you the call centers industry will die.
My experience is that most of our Desi cousins say no, and hang up quickly.
Let me put it this way, let us show some wisdom and don’t buy what you don’t need, at least talk to the caller in a pleasant way!!.
It may be one of our Desi cousins trying to make ends meet.
Thank you and may God bless you all.
