Hello Friends,
I moved from USA to Ontario 9 months ago and secured auto insurance from State farm. After six months they ahve raised my insurance by CAD 20/month.

The reason cited is that I was involved in an an accident in US and I have not been able to provide a proof that it was not fault. In the accident I was rear ended by another car and the other party insurance paid up for the damage to my car. The State Farm canada is asking for a letter from my US insurer - Liberty Mutual stating that I was not considered to be at fault. Despite my several attempts Liberty Mutual would not give any letter.

I have provide all the possible circumstantial proofs which establish that I was not at fault:
1.DMV record(New Jersey) showing no points against the mentioned of this accident. If I was at fault ,I'd have accrued that! The police report has not charged me or gievn any citation.
2.Covering Letter of the other party insurer to me making the payout. If I was at fault, why would I get paid by the other insurer!
3.Liberty mutual insurance premium record after the accident which infact went down for the next year!

I'm quite frustrated with the situation as I'm being penalized for something which had not done and Stae Farm would not budge. Is possible that the agent is not representing my case well? Can I make a direct plea with State Farm.

I'd greatly apprecaite your advice. Thanks in advance.

My suggestion would be to email Liberty Mutuals Corporate Office, plus State Farms Head quarters here in Canada.

Also, try getting quote from Johnson.ca, they recognize your US driving history.

Mister jackofall (though it seems a misnomer in your present case)

The best thing to do when you get insurance in a new country is to get a letter from your previous country's insurance company of a clean record (or otherwise). It should not be any specific incident related but a general letter and insurance companies would use their own terminology which will define whether or not your record is clean or a bit or a lot tainted.

You can ask for such a general letter from Liberty Mutual telling them that you are applying for a new insurance in Canada and the company wants it.

I did that when I moved from Indonesia and Singapore and have got my insurance from Statefarm too - no problems.

Thanks Chandresh (I like you're observation on my handle!) & Navin,

Appreciate your comments.

As a matter of fact I did get letters from the Insurance company, NJ driving history record et al. And State Farm did cover me here up until Dec at a lower premium. But while renewing the next 6 month premium they've unilaterally jacked up the rate on account of the accident which is mentioned in my driving record(just a mention of the incident with no reference to my fault ).

Any other ideas :)
