We are landed immigrants, planning to move to Toronto this summer.

I have been reading Toronto Star since few weeks. I got shocked on reading so many crimes happening in/around Toronto.

Below are links for some of these crimes.

1) Gunshot victim flees to bus

2). Bail hearings put off in gang sex attack case
Four accused after images of assault on unconscious girl surface at school

3) Man shot dead in front of house

4) Teacher accused of sex with student

Could senior Desi's comment on these crimes?

I feel it is still better than many other cities even if compared to our Southern neighbor.

See you are able to apply the statistics against the population and the crimes and compare it with another metro of the same size.

Other than few areas where folks around you will check you / your car every inch out, I feel mostly all right.

is just a fantasy.

While we have fewer crimes per-capita than anywhere in North America, we are not completely immune. The difference is that the press has the freedom to report crimes which is not the case in many parts of the world and criminals here are more likely apprehended than not. It does not matter who they are, who they know or where they hide. Case in point is the biker gangs.

This is just too funny. Where are you from? For example, I am from Bangalore, India. If I read the local editions of Times of India, Deccan Herald, Indian Express or Praja Vaani, the crime news can scare me to death. And that's just "reported news". So, no matter what city's local newspaper you read, most of the times, you WILL find bad news.

I have been in Toronto for the past 9 years. I have roamed downtown and many suburbs well past midnight several, several times. Sometimes alone, sometimes in the company of people. I have not run into any kind of trouble. I love this city for that reason.
On the other hand, I have friends in many US cities and they are so restricted in where they can go and what time of day they can go its not even funny.

However, every city, town has certain bad areas. These are not necessarily crime breeding neighborhoods but have got that rep because of the socio-ecomonic conditions. You will obviously stay out of those areas.

Take it easy. Toronto (and its many suburbs) is a great place to live.

You will forget about the crime once you look at your pay cheque and the income tax deductions. In fact this will make you so mad, no one will dare to mug you!!

Compared to Detroit???????? Toronto is nothing in crimes.

When the highway 75 in Detroit was shut down once, I had to drive along the service drive (something like the collector lanes on 401) and I did not stop at any red lights (other than a cautious slowdown) since the whole thing was outright scary due to special characters hanging out all over.

This was 8 am in the morning.

I have recently moved to Toronto in retail/apartment building. Within couple of days someone threw a stone and broke my retail glass door.

What can you do? I just enabled my Indian mind set.
