We(myself. husband and 1 year old daughter) are planning to land by November 2015 and since we don't have any relatives there, i would like to seek your advise on few things

i) Myself and my husband, both having experience in Oil & Gas field. So is it good that we'll move to Calgary than to follow the crowd to GTA?

ii) Is it easy to get a surviving job in Calgary compared to Toronto?

iii) If coming to Toronto, pls. suggest a place to settle as we don't have any idea, also we don't have friend/relatives to discuss with.

iv) Is cost of living is less in Calgary- as I read it many articles??

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Nimajo,
Please move to Calgary, Edmonton or Red Hat. Cold will be unbearable but then your much needed jobs are there. Though the oil industry is in recession, the price of Oil will be going up. It will bring you the much needed job.
Alternate locations can be Sasketchewan (areas where there is oil and Gas).
As people tell me, many mining companies have their HQ in BC. So they may hire you there on the basis of transferable skills as oil& gas and mining are related.

Survival job is better got in Calgary or Edmonton than the GTA/Toronto. Many immigrants come to Toronto plus the locals graduating in large numbers are looking at survival jobs.

If coming to Toronto, better live in Mississauga. But Oil and Gas has no future in Toronto. Sarnia has an oil refining plant but it is an isolated town.

Cost of living is less in Calgary as the population is less. Rent is comparitively lower. Before tax was in 2 components of 7% and 8%. One component was not there in Alberta (where Calgary is). Now we have HST which is the two taxes combined. So not sure if the taxes are less there. Other seniors can help.

Welcome to Canada.

Murali

1. Yes Oil & Gas field definitely Calgary is a better option for you than Toronto. Much better chances & higher salary than Toronto if you want a job in your field.

2. Yes survival jobs are easier to get , especially when the oil prices are higher.
Lot of desi immigrants & Chinese in Toronto competing in Toronto for these survival jobs . Alberta actually gets Temporary Foreign Workers ( TFW ) to do these low level jobs in Tim Hortons etc ..MOST of them are Filipinos who come here as TFW to work as Nanny etc.

Toronto you will always get ONLY minimum wage for a survival job as they can find lot of people to do them. But Calgary expect to be paid more for the survival job.

3. Mississauga or border of Mississauga/Toronto like Etobicoke is the best place to live so you have access to both cities/jobs & transit. Avoid certain bad areas in Etobicoke & you will be fine.

4. Yes the rent & house prices are lower than Toronto. But don't expect a huge massive difference, maybe 15 % - 20 % here & there depending on the area.

Some other differences :

1. NO PST in Alberta . So you only pay 5 % GST in Calgary as opposed to 13 % or more HST in most other Canadian provinces . HST = GST + PST

2. Weather is way more cold & way more snow than Toronto. Winter also starts earlier & ends later in Calgary than Toronto ..I mean snow wise & cold temp. wise

3. Calgary has a small city/town feel to it ..you won't get the big city & busy/rushed feel like Toronto.
Their Subway/Metro is more like a Light Rail Transit as opposed to bigger trains like Toronto.

4. Calgary & Alberta in general is RED neck territory. So expect about 70 % of Calgary population to be White. Toronto only 50 % or less is White . Plus immigrant ratio is higher.

Definitely more desis in Toronto than Calgary , BOTH % wise & population wise. More than 50 % of Torontonians are born outside Canada, so are foreign born.

5. Not much to see in Calgary from sighseeing & tourist point of view. Most sightseeing will be outside Calgary in Rockies etc.

If you want a home based & desi feeling Toronto is definitely better. But if you want a job, career feeling Calgary is better. Your personal life & social life will be better in Toronto , if you want to do the whole DESI thing , but your professional life will be better in Calgary.

So in a nut shell , good personal life & good weather choose Toronto , good professional life & bad weather choose Calgary...if you are a desi & want to do the whole desi/indian thing :)
