I was very regular in writing to this forum when we had initially landed in Toronto and also later. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this forum, as I have made use of the good advise and information provided herein during the last 4 years.

On 18th July 2007, our three year period outside Canada will finish and if we have to retain our PR status, we have to now settle in Canada for good and ensure that we stay there continuously during the next two years in order to enable us renew our PR cards when it expires in 2009.

Since we are holding good jobs in Kuwait, we had earlier decided not to settle in Canada considering our age (late 40s) and also without any technical qualification to back us in Canada (I am an Ex.Asst. and my husband is an Accountant). Our only child is studying biotechnology in Toronto and she is doing extremely well there. She is quite independent and is not very keen that we move now to Canada considering our easy and luxurious lifestyle here. She is presently with us here for the next three months for her summer break and she will be getting her Canadian passport after one year.

As the D day when we will be loosing our PR status is nearing, we are just confused and wondering if we are taking the right decision in staying put in Kuwait, instead of taking a risk and moving to Canada.

If we do not move to Canada now, we always have the option of being sponsored by our daugher as dependent parents may be after 10 years, after she gets a job and settles in Canada and till then we can continue working here and of course we will be visiting Canada for our vacation and our daughter can also do like wise. Our daugher is definitely in favour of this option.

I am a little confused as my head is advising me to stay put here and my heart is advising me move, so I would appreciate your views, should I listen to my head or my heart ?

While it is a detailed post , but not detailed enough to tell us why your head says stay in Kuwait and heart says come to Canada. Stay in Kuwait - if I interpret it correctly - would be because of financial and career matters. Come to Canada would be a living style and freedom (so called) matter.

If you try to put down the pros for head and that for heart on this forum, may be we will be able to contribute our inputs better and help you take a decision. And for all you know, once you put down the points in writing, you will get your answer yourself.

Without knowing much details - but since you have similar family structure as mine and some other similar things, my advice would be follow your head - following your heart usually gives you heartaches which are worse than headaches!

Good analysis by Chandresh but I couldn't stop myself asking you, what is the benefit for Canada for having immigrants like you?

I know some accountants from middle east who took the risk and landed here and ultimately settled here after a long struggle.

I don't see any benefit for Canadian society for having immigrants like you when thousands of other well deserving young people from India have to wait for 4-5 years.

You don't want to come here and pay taxes, you just want to spend a few thousand dollars so that your children can study here for lesser fees and qualify for scholarships.

The only benefit I see, is your daughter will be a (welcome) addition to the workforce here who can pay taxes and to support the social insurance for the aging population.

Just a thought provoking reply.

Hi Maple_Asian,

However it is not clear if you are pointing to Chandresh or Kuwait User. But one thing is strongly indicated in your post which reads (beteween the lines),
...Jub hum yahan fasen hain to tum kyon nahin aate...

Chandresh, thank you for your reply, I have always valued your advise. I am elaborating my post for a clearer picture for the readers to give their advise.

Facts why head is ruling the heart :
1. Currently holding very well paid jobs with a net savings in six digits in Canadian dollars after all living costs, daughers education and other expenses here.
2. Cost of living is very low here, no income tax to pay, no VAT or tax when shopping, no car insurance, no charges for water, very low charges for electricity, rents are low.
2. Full time maid - no cooking, cleaning etc.
4. Five minutes drive to the office
5. Very relaxing job - no rush or running, nil stress
6. India is very close, can visit parents and relatives often
7. Airline travel cost from the Middle East is low, hence can take vacations atleast twice a year.
8. Fear of a major change in life at this age - what if we do not gel with the Canadian society.
9. Lots of friends here who have time for us and we have time for them and hence good social life.
10. Our daugher is planning do her Master/Phd in Biotechnology in the United States after she gets her Canadian passport, so the possibility of her getting a job in the US and finally settling there is more likely to happen.
12. Our daugher is persuading us to stay back in Kuwait, as she says our permant move to Canada may allow her to visit us frequently, however as she is studing in McMaster University, most likely we may be employed near downtown Toronto and the chances of our daugher visiting us every week of for that matter very month may not happen. Her advise is spending quality time rather than quantity time.
13. We can support our daugher's education in one of the top Universities in the US if we continue to stay here.
14. We can settle in Canada once we retire from here, when our daughter sponsor us as dependant parents.
15. We can spend our retired life in Canada doing some charity work or voluantry work.
16. Fear of exhausting all our savings if we do not get good jobs and later forced to do labour work.
17. I am not sure how I will manage in very cold weather.
18. We are not technically qualified, both of us will have to do some fresh courses and look for jobs and start our career all over again.

Facts why heart is ruling the head:
1. What if we get good jobs in Canada within three or four months of our move.
2. Can be near our daughter and can see her any time we want and may be able to influence her life more being physically closer to her.
3. What if we do not get a PR status later when our daughter applies for our dependant visa.
4. Canada is very green, nice and a very beautiful place during summer
5. Pension after we retire, which we will not get in the Middle East.
6. Medical is free in Canada till our deathas where as medical is free only in the Middle East till we are employed here.
7. What if a war errupts due to the current situation in Iran
8. I have the confidence of starting a new career all over again, integrating into the Canadian society and getting to the top if there are opportunities in Canada.
9. My sister is in the US, so I can visit her frequently
10. May be I will be more healthy living in Canada in the long run with all the running around and doing house work etc.

Look forward to hearing the reader's views.

Nice topic and nice posts.
As one having been in different parts of the world and having seen the lifestyles of people, I would strongly advise against "Kuwaitiuser" from coming to Canada unless they miss seeing their daughter 24/7.
As your daughter said, she could sponser you later on. Just take care that she sponsers you 5 years from your actual date of arrival as it would be a fair waiting time for the processing of family sponsership application form.
Canada will be a far cry from the easy, multi cultural life that you guys are enjoying in Kuwait.
As age / Qulification is against you, it is suicide if you plan to come here expecting the same / easy lifestyle that you enjoyed in Kuwait.
Hope you take my comments in a positive manner.
I would also encourage you to do what Chandreshji has said. It can clean a lot of mist.
All the best in any decision that you take.

Sidenote to Ben Prasad- It is really heartening to know that you promptly reply to CD from China. I really like the honestly and Down to earth nature of your posts.

Hi kuwaituser,

I used to follow your thread few years back, after lot of discussion you finally said and still saying that you don't want to come here..but confused.

Being in the Gulf when you have a good position/job, it's normal to be
confused.!!Because you have options...However once you come here all your confusions go away....Why?...You don't have a choice..

I am not saying that this place is good or that place is bad, it all depends on the person. In your case for me it's clear....follow your head..as Chandresh said ...headaches..are better than heartaches...you are lucky as your are getting straight answers......and that too absoltely free...
