Is it possible get TN/J1 visa at airport without actually going to US on that day?

No...you can possibly get a VISA at the border and then come turn back and re-enter Canada. At the airports it is not possible

Is it possible to get TN/J1 visa by flying to nearest US city just to get your visa or you have to get your visa when you actually move for your job/study?

You cannot fly to a US city to get your TN Visa. You cannot get a TN visa if you are not at the US/Canada border. You can get a TN Visa only
1.) US/Canada border checkpoint (e.g., Alexandria bay, 1000 island bridge, Niagara crossing etc.,)

2.) Any Canadian airport with flights going to the USA.Once you cross US immigration, you are basically on a domestic flight to the USA.

You can get a J1 visa at the border or at an airport (if you are a Canadian citizen). If you are applying outside Canada, you will have to go and attend an interview at any US consulate.

BTW, what happened to your wife's J2 visa..you said you would be applying ? Any progress on that ?
