Lost in the excitement of the Swaminarayan mandir was the soft opening ceremony of the Laotian Buddha Temple at 17969 Airport Road.
I am sure there must be many of you who are into Gautama Buddha. If you have the time and inclination, do visit this still unfinished Temple. It has several towering Buddha statues in several different poses, one for each day of the week. All hand made.
It is not as impressive as the Swaminarayan one but still worth it. The Temple is a simple structure, but there are ponds (one with a huge turtle in it) and fountains and it is quite picturesque.
Paintings inside the Temple were donated by artists from Montreal.
It is about 5-10 minutes by car past the Caledon Inn as you drive north on Airport Road, on the right hand side. You have to drive past it to a small sideroad called Finnerty and hang a right to get into the Temple from behind.
After that you can drive for an hour, right up Airport Road, to Wassaga beach and have a day of fun and frolic. The scenery also is better than going up Highway 400. On the way, at Cashtown you will see a Khalsa gas station. Then comes Stayner with an LCBO, buy some beer, carry on straight till you hit Mosley Street and hang a right down to the Shopper's Drug Mart parking lot around 46th street, park there and walk down 500 metres to the beach. No worries, enough 'decent' latrines to relieve yourself after you've downed the beer. Take balls, frisbees, cricket bats and all, bathing suits as well.Portable BBQs o/w there is a Subway and Pizza Depot nearby.
Cheap (Alfred E. Newman style) outing!
Enjoy!
