Hey CDs,
I landed in Toronto, a few days back with my family. I plan to do my college at University here as a landed immigrant.
Well, my experiences with the place till now have been pretty nice ... clean air, not too much crowd ... all in all a really scenic and beautiful country with very friendly people.
However, I did find the food to be REALLY expensive ... the cheapest meal sets me back my around 4 -5 $ for a small sandwich, which isn't quite filling. I can't help but convert the prices to rupees ... around 230 for just a sandwich.
Are there any other cheaper restaurant, or is this the standard?
I applied for my Health Card ... but he told me, it couldn't be functionally until around 3 months? If I ever need to visit a doctor ... what do I have to do until then?
Taxis are also quite expensive ... I guess going by bus is the only other alternative ... I take a day pass sometimes seems more economical. Most probably, once I'm settled I'll go for the monthly pass.
I'm in two mind ... once I go to university ... should I do some part time work ... or should I concentrate on studying more? ... I think I'll do the former, don't want to be too much of a financial burden for my parents.
I would like to know when I can apply for citizenship and the exact procedure ... I think it can be done after living in Canada for 1069 days.
One question, I had was that my parents have made their landing with me .... but they won't be staying in Canada here for that long ... they are planning to go back. I think I might stay, finish my college and apply for citizenship ... is there any way I can convert them to citizens on my sponsorship? If so, where can I read some exact information and time required to do so?
If I ever do get citizenship, would I lose my Indian passport? What if I need to go there again? I have to apply for a visit visa? Is there a possibity of being a dual citizen?
Finally, any tips for a new comer ? ....
Thanks!

Are you there?
Hi Blue Lobster,
Thanks for the reply ... well, I did use the search for some of the things ... but I thought I could get more to the point replies by making a thread and also replying to any of the views I got ... the searched threads are quite some time back
Greetings Indian321
First of all, All the best in your endevours
Secondly, from what I have seen and observed:
In spite of a good education and experience back in the home-country, by and large if one doesn't have North American experience to back one up, then landing a good job (subjective) here in the field of one's choice could pose an unrelenting hurdle.
If you have the option and support system, I am of the opinion that doing a useful univ. course here would pay off.
Just my thought
Thanks

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies all ... bombamma, I agree with that ... hopefully I'm planning to do the same.
Could someone shed some light on the procedure I can follow to get my parents to become citizens too?
