Hey CDs,

I landed in Toronto, a few days back with my family. I plan to do my college at University here as a landed immigrant.

Well, my experiences with the place till now have been pretty nice ... clean air, not too much crowd ... all in all a really scenic and beautiful country with very friendly people.

However, I did find the food to be REALLY expensive ... the cheapest meal sets me back my around 4 -5 $ for a small sandwich, which isn't quite filling. I can't help but convert the prices to rupees ... around 230 for just a sandwich.
Are there any other cheaper restaurant, or is this the standard?

I applied for my Health Card ... but he told me, it couldn't be functionally until around 3 months? If I ever need to visit a doctor ... what do I have to do until then?

Taxis are also quite expensive ... I guess going by bus is the only other alternative ... I take a day pass sometimes seems more economical. Most probably, once I'm settled I'll go for the monthly pass.

I'm in two mind ... once I go to university ... should I do some part time work ... or should I concentrate on studying more? ... I think I'll do the former, don't want to be too much of a financial burden for my parents.

I would like to know when I can apply for citizenship and the exact procedure ... I think it can be done after living in Canada for 1069 days.

One question, I had was that my parents have made their landing with me .... but they won't be staying in Canada here for that long ... they are planning to go back. I think I might stay, finish my college and apply for citizenship ... is there any way I can convert them to citizens on my sponsorship? If so, where can I read some exact information and time required to do so?

If I ever do get citizenship, would I lose my Indian passport? What if I need to go there again? I have to apply for a visit visa? Is there a possibity of being a dual citizen?

Finally, any tips for a new comer ? :) ....

Thanks!

This is the standard. Lot cheaper to buy bread, cheese, pickles etc and make the sandwich at home if you can. The best deal in food I've found in Canada have to be the 3 for $1 samosas at Indian grocery stores. Can't beat that!

(this gives me an idea for a new thread)

And stop converting. I know its easier said than done initially, but you won't get anywhere fast trying to do that.

For the rest of your questions, welcome to a feature called "Search". :)

Hi Blue Lobster,

Thanks for the reply ... well, I did use the search for some of the things ... but I thought I could get more to the point replies by making a thread and also replying to any of the views I got ... the searched threads are quite some time back :)

Greetings Indian321
First of all, All the best in your endevours

Secondly, from what I have seen and observed:
In spite of a good education and experience back in the home-country, by and large if one doesn't have North American experience to back one up, then landing a good job (subjective) here in the field of one's choice could pose an unrelenting hurdle.

If you have the option and support system, I am of the opinion that doing a useful univ. course here would pay off.

Just my thought

Thanks
b

Yes there is a waiting time to get a health card, which is 90 days for now. In case you have to go to a doc you would have to pay about $40 for an appointment. Also remeber that the hospital here charge about $250 in case you go there in an emergency or even otherwise.
You have an option of buying medical insurance which should be about $300- $400 for the 3 months period for a family (atleast that is what i paid) .

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies all ... bombamma, I agree with that ... hopefully I'm planning to do the same.

Could someone shed some light on the procedure I can follow to get my parents to become citizens too?
