Hi group
I have been toying with the idea of staring some business on my own to do on evenings and w/end sonly as I have a 9-5 job which I am not ready to give up yet. I was talking to a friend of mine after a long time and he told me that he started a business on the side (he & his wife hold a full time job) importing sweets & savories from india and distributing here in GTA. He does not have a retail shop or anything, he just does it out of his garage.Another friend of mine in Singapore has taken updistributorship of some home spa product. This got me fired up and I am seriously thinking of doing something of my own on evenings & w/ends.
One of my ideas is to import Indian handicrafts(small & big stuff) and sell them here.
How abt a small dosa joint (with best quality dosas & idlys) that is open only on evenings and w/ends (not sure if this is feasible).
What do you guys think.
there was a post here by "nannhualways" who wanted to start a indian stype bakery. Did that person start.

Businesses depends of where you live and what your interest's are.
In case of Dosa joints, you will have a huge profit margin but you must live in an area where the north indians abund as they are very fond of Dosa's and you can milk a lot of money from them. If you go to a sri lankan takeout, you will get a very big dosa for 60 cents. The taste is not that good but they do give the quantity for money. So we really canot compete against them unless we give taste to the north Indians. Many tamilians are too stingy to afford for a dosa and hence you must not open a shop where tamilians abund. Also if you open a dosa shop where white are predominant, then you need to give very huge advertisement and free dosa's for some time to make the white gets addicted to Dosa (just like coffee of Tim hortons). A sucess story is DOsa corner at Newin centre where you can do a case study.
Also recently I came to know of many gujju's in the area of Kipling and Humberline blvd.. In fact all the apartments in this area are occupied by Gujju's. It seems that a pakisthani noticed this and he is brining fresh vegetables to be sold in their parking lot on weekend. He had discovered a niche market.
However for educated people, I feel that this dosa / vegetable business maynot be that good. You could turn into Primerica, RESP, selling business. As you may be aware, there are a lot of players in the market for all these handicraft business and not a lot of sellers. May be you could import something good from India which can be distributed to the $ stores and which would be a good hit in Canada.
Sankaracharya once discussed upon this subject and you could search for it in the charcha.

I sometimes wonder how the whites would respond to a 'pakoda' corner .
On a serious note there must be things in India which are wanted here and vice versa. Sometimes I think of taking paper / wood from here and get printed material back here benefitting both the places and making some money in the bargain .
Can someone suggest something else which is feasible .

Samosa's are very popular ...... my office everyone loves a samosa and they have been having them even before i joined .... and i am the only non "white" here ..... even in Dubai i had co-worker ... "whites"who freaked out on samosa's .... so a pakoda corner with chat,samosa & kachori might work .... indian fast food !!!!!
How abt importing pooja mandir. every indian family would need one (or almost every indian family). Is there a market for this or is the market already flooded with one too many importers.
