Dear Canadian Desis ! Good Day. I am planning to go to Mumbai in the beginning of January 2008 for a surgery and I am looking for cheap hotels in the surroundings of Juhu as the hospital (Lotus Hospital) is around this area. Can anyone adviced me where i can get cheap hotels? I had been on expedia.com, kayak.com and hotels.com but they are expensive. I would appreciate some reply and adviced. Thanks in advance

Hello NY,

Your concern is obvious.

Last time (in Oct. / Nov. this year), I went to India, first time after 6 years of moving to Canada; I was surprised to find things a lot changed to worse and in Delhi it was near impossible to find something reasonably good even in Rs. 6,500 a day. My budget (as I thought) was about Rs. 4,000 and not sure how much money is required to get a good room. Just for comparison, in this money a very nice room is possible in many big cities in other countries. Most Delhi hotel people want astronomical prices but have dirtiest rooms and poorest service.

Mumbai could be another example.

Ben

PS- I am again planned to go to Delhi and had to stay in a hotel for business reasons. Any suggestion for something reasonable in up to Rs. 5,000 is welcome.

Ben,

You can try ITDC hotel - The Janpath. It will probably fit your budget. I had stayed in this hotel around 5 years ago and it was ok (I will rate average). It's location is good and in the middle of the city. See link http://www.theashokgroup.com/

Hope this helps & do inform your experience for others benefit.

Ash

The last time I passed through Mumbai was seven years ago and at that time they had decent hotels there with three and two+ star hotel rooms for about Re.1400/- per day plus tax of course. I don't know the current rates. But to find one in a particular location will be a hard task and I thought the Bombay Group on this CD board will step in and help. There are a whole lot of guys in that group and hence the request.

Here are a few websites and low end hotels to give you an idea as to what they look like in pictures. In reality it will be half of what you see in these pictures. So go a notch higher if it is close by where you want to book one for a little longer period. You can dicker too and see if they come down and give you a break.

1. Many hospitals nowadays offer boarding as part of thier package for surgery - you might want to check that out with your hospital.

2. Depending upon your duration of stay you can easily get decent hotel rooms in and around Juhu for around Rs.5000/day. If you are looking for cheaper options, I am afraid you will have to do it personally when you reach there. There are many guest houses and community based cultural organisations in Mumbai who provide subsidised boarding for deserving family members of hospitalised patients, from out of state.

3. I would suggest, you book a decent hotel over the net for 2 days and then shop around after landing. It is hard to find good deals online for Mumbai hotels.

4. There is an ISKON site in Juhu, thier accomodations are clean and comfortable, not very flashy, but they have some religious issues - you might want to check that out if it suits you.

Will post more if I find some more information. It will help if you can advise how many rooms you need and for how many days.

Rememeber, prices for NRI are higher than for locals.

All the best.

Hiren

Hi,
I am from mumbai, and can help you find good accomodation in a

decent hotel in Mumbai.
By the way Lotus hospital is good for eye surgery.
In and around juhu the most well known hotels are
1) Sun & Sand,
2)Holiday Inn,
3)Sea Princess
4)J W Marriot
The last option is the most expensive of all
Hope this helps
