Dear CDs

I am thinking of going to NYC this summer. I know that Manhattan hotels are pretty expensive.

Can anybody give me more details about staying some place in New Jersey and taking a train to NYC for sight seeing? I looked on the net but would like some first-hand information. Wikitravel mentions staying in Bronx or Queens, but not sure how safe those areas are.

Looking at NYC-NJ map, Hoboken seems like an ideal location but hotels in Hoboken are expensive. Another person suggested me staying at Edison due to Gujarati majority.

Is there a way to optimise between the time and money spent in commuting from NJ vs paying more to live in NYC?

Thanks in advance

I would highly recommend Edison.
There are trains from Edison to NYC and many software engineers take that train.
If you are going by car, I would recommend staying near Liberty intl. airport , Newark. Cost was cheap and it was a bit close to many attractions of NYC. But any place in NYC and Newark is best avoided due to drug addicts. (Edison is recommended).
Queens and Bronx are also not safe unless you have a recommendation from someone.
I would suggest you to see the NYC train lines and stay near a station (much away from NYC) where you have good feedback and cheap hotel costs.

Je Suis USA !!!

Register ur email id on ncrowd.com. Thy hv good deals. tke their deals to the hotel site which ncrowd gv on their promotion and book it directly with the hotel.

Now thy hv deal of $129 per person for 2 night n 3 day stay in NYC coz this is off season. u won't be able to see liberty statue closely which is main attraction. Food is not included but shopping sightseeing n hotel stay included.

hope this helps little bit. :)

Hi ,

There are a lot of threads on 'New York Trip' on CD.. I m sure you will get very good information.

When we visited 2 years back we stayed in different hotels & areas in NJ ... The best I found and would certainly recommend was the Rodeway Inn , Meadowlands , Secaucus @ $100 / night for 2 double beds

Free parking , 3 minute walk to bus stop where you get a 10 minute bus ride to Times Square , CVS Pharmacy nearby .. overall very convenient . I am a Choice Hotels member and from time to time they have promotions coming up and most of the time I stay @ their hotels in Canada or the US..

Only drawback of the above hotel is that it is difficult to access it via GPS and if you miss it , you d perhaps have a hard time getting back ( there s a gas station just ahead of it and I d recommend defining the gas station on to your GPS) - This will happen only the first time when you are unsure of the place.

Fido,
I share the concern with you.
I stayed at near liberty international airport in Newark and while locating the hotel, I moved past it. Since most of the streets in NY and Newark are one way, had to spend 20 mins to try to come back. There was no GPS then (in 2005) or atleast not everyone used it but luckily the cities in North America are made of Grid system so I tried moving in the grid and came back to the same spot.

Also an important thing that I noticed when I moved to NY outskirts was the increased number of police cars with sireins going to attend a 911 call. It was lots when compared to what I had heard in Toronto.
