Worst telephone card i have seen in Canada is called Greater Punjab and it could even be a scam. Voice quality is poor if at all successfully connected. Most of the times there is one at customer care 905 405 1622 and you will get a message that voice mail has not been set up for this number. Suddenly the card would stop working and you could get error messenge "messsage 5" -contact the business office. If you contact the call center to tell about error message, there is one one there!

There are some crooks in the phone card business...someone in consumer authority needs to look at this. I also have very bad experience with phone cards in Toronto. Most desi cards are phony and give you less that half the time they promise on their charts.

I am noticing this for last four years. Usually I don't but phone cards, but everynow and then somebody comes up with a suggestion that so and so card is good.

Whenever I tried them 2 out of 3 times I had bad experience.

My last experience was with Sangam. It was good for 4-5 times and than the last couple of cards didn't work at all - so I gave up using that.

My experiences are the same as GG's. Same card too. Needless frustration if you ask me.

Same here. I did try 2-3 cards after my landing ( 6 years before) , learned a quick lesson. I am using Primus for long distance, their rates and service are next to none. They charge only 23c for India, but if with this rate plan Mid East is bit expensive so I am using Yak (10-15-945) for Mid East and Europe calls.

Thanks and regards.

SANGAM TELEPHONE CARD

My friend used Sangam card yesterday and 80 cents were deducted when the call did not connect. It takes 10-20 seconds before the call is conencted and you hear the bell ringing tone on other side. He called the call center and they asked him to wait for 1 hour before making the call though they did not promise that 80 cents would go back into the card. He had to make call urgently so he went ahead without those 80 cents getting back to the card.

This whole card business is rather shady.

1) Most shopkeepers (desis) will sell you phone cards for about 50 cents to a dollar less than the printed price (for a $5 card).
2) Nobody's customers service really works, its a farce.
3) You never get the promised talk-time for the amount on the card, ever.
4) Voice clarity when making international calls is ridiculously unreliable.

Basically it amounts to cheating and it'll only go on until someone takes them to court (It is however a better option than Bell, which I liken to highway robbery).

Personally, I think its better to go with a company like Primus or Startec etc etc. 23 cents per minute to India (to land-lines) is not bad at all. They also have a flat U.S. / Canada rate of 7 cents currently I believe. And for places not included, like Biomed said, you can always use pick-codes.
