Greetings! Wonder if anyone had any experience with working for an
international organisation (NATO, the UN, OSCE) outside Canada and its implications to maintaining Canadian residency status.

Wonder if any of time spent with an int'l agency where Canada is a member would count for the purposes of maintaining PR in Canada (I believe it does not counts towards naturalization, but not sure about maintaining residency)

Grateful for any info about your experience and helpful precedents.

Sorry!! for posting at two different places (Independent category & Citizenship) ,was not sure which one was appropriate.

International organizations and companies that have their head offices outside Canada (Microsoft, Oracle etc) do not qualify as Canadian businesses and hence they will not have any beneficial effect as far as Canadian residency is concerned

Dear brown_bear thanx for the reply, but here I am not talking about the companies like IBM,Microsoft or oracle which are private firms but the question is about the international organisations like UN where Canada is member and infact one of the founding members and one of the biggest donors of UN.

gags, why don't you cite a specific instance of what exactly you are trying to get at?

There is another member of this forum who is in the same position. Her name is Jona V and her ID. is Jonav.
She had clearly stated that her time outside canada in org's like UN, NATO WOULD NOT be counted for maintaining residency.
Please "Search Charcha" and go through her posts where she states that.
Hope this helps.

There are clear guidelines on type of acceptable employment for purposes of calculating your residence. You have to be part of a canadian business or a canadian or provincial public enterprise. If you are interested in humanitarian work you can contact CIDA or even World Vision Canada. You can also check with CANADEM ..... with reference to residence status.
As for UN and NATO ... they probably would not be eligible because they are not a Canadian Enterprise. You would probably be elegible for residence if you worked for IBM or Microsoft Canada & were sent on an overseas assingnment.
Check http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5529E2.asp and if the organisation you want to work for meets this guidelines, then it is ok.

Also check http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/CIDAWEB/acdicida.nsf/En/JUD-12910547-LNE#pdf for possibilites for PR

This article was found on the website and its date of publication is not known, but gives raise to a lot more questions besides the ones that we are seeking answers to and also provides us with an insight into the changes that have taken place since this article.

I do not want to submit the link into other CD sections where they are seeking an answer to medical and health questions. But is of interest to them too as I find that there is a paragraph that provides some reference to it also.

Please read through the same and pursue it if it is found helpful in taking the matter further through the Immigration and Health Channels
