Where and how to get air ticket if you have to fly out to India at a very short notice?

If it is during the day, try a agent. A friend of mine once had an emergency, while I was arranging for his ticket, he went home to pack and leave. We called the agent at noon and he was on the 5pm flight.
Off hours, the only choice is the airlines directly, you'll pay heavily for that, but then it depends on the type of emergency
