My parents are currently visiting from India and are due to return to India in January. However, I would like them to extend their stay. Their ticket mentions that it is valid upto January 11. I wish to know whether their ticket can be extended and if so, will there be a penalty or some other charge?

Normally you are allowed to make one change in a ticket without penalty. It is always a good idea to check with the airline.
