Sucess is not an accident it is a result of hardwork with intelligence.
To everyone,
When I came to Canada in 1998, I got my first credit card in 1999 (exactly 1 year aftear I first landed here). I was on a student visa in those days. All major banks had turned me down (for obvious reasons). It was only Royal Bank that gave me my first credit card.. with a teeny-weeny credit limit of $500. In retrospect this is small but mind you, you need to build a credit history ! After this, CIBC and TD Bank followed, again with the same amount. The 1.5K$ credit helped me when I had to show proof of funds (in those days of cos, August 2000).
One word of caution to all new immigrants.
1.) Generally Credit card companies will try hawking "for extra peace and security, we would like you to join our coverage plan.. blah blah blah".. REFUSE ALL SUCH PLANS.. Till todate, MBNA and American Express offered me such deals
2.) For ppl on student visa, make sure you get the Royal Bank Student Visa II. Its the no-fee option card. There is a woth-fee card also !
3.) Refuse, and I say, refuse all credit card applications that come to you in the mail. It is JUNK and a form of SPAM
4.) Do not accept any CC deal over the telephone. Capital One is one such company... They harrassed me for a long time !
5.) Do not go for Department store Credit Cards (like Sears, Bay etc.. ) They have a huge rate of interest..28% ! when compared with banks (worst case = 18-19%)
Another point regarding Junk phone calls. If you feel that you do not the person at the other end, then do the following :-
"Person :- Hello may I speak with Mr / Mrs XXX " ?
You :- (always ask this) May I know who is calling ?
Person :- I am calling from xyz....and at this point you just hang up the fone !
Dont worry, it feels good to sound rude !

Good article , I read at another site:
Canada is Great!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am posting this to those who are thinking of moving to Canada from the US. I was quite confused when I did it and this will hopelfully help some of you who are thinking about it.
I moved to Canada two years ago after living in Colorado for 5 years. I was quite apprehensive when I moved here. Was not sure about the country, policies, jobs, taxes etc. But you can nicely settle down.
Most importantly, I know several people who compare it to the US - mostly in terms of the Green Dollar. Yes, absolutely you will make more money in the US and the US dollar has more value. Having said that, the loonie is quite comparable. If a home costs USD. 300k in a good suburb in the United States, a similar home will cost you CAD. 300K in Canada. The cost of grocery is also comparable, though slightly more. Cars & Electronics are a little expensive - factoring in the 1.35 conversion rate. Overall, you can maintain a similar standard of living.
There are more taxes in Canada. But the quality of life is also good. The subject to taxes is just overly magnified. The taxation on income is not flat as it is in the US (30% of your salary). Taxes are different and is based on the range of the income. For example, 25K-50K is taxed at 25%, while 50K-70K is taxed at 32%. For a person earning in the high 5 digits, the overall tax will be around 36%........ higher but comparable.
Job market is good, albeit not great. A deserving person can find a job in a few weeks (atleast I did). Toronto is a good place for jobs in Canada.
What I have seen, if you move to Canada whole heartedly and embrace it, you will love it. The country has wonderful things to offer, in my opinion. It is quite safe, people are friendly, diverse cultures and a little of everything. It makes you feel like you belong here!!
Bottomline, if you feel like staying in the US is better, you should do so by all means. But if you have made up your mind to move to Canada for good, just do it. It is definitely worth it. Good luck.

We will find a way or we will make one
^ maybe perhaps you moved from Colorado your view is different from mine. I miss the US terribly having grown up in the midwest. Anyway.. about taxes, I find them lower here than the midwest. As an accountant I know the US doesn't have a flat taxation system, it's only some states that might, and Colorado may be one of them. Otherwise, it's a staggered tax system same as what the Canadian model was based on. If you compare it on the federal level, Canadians actually pay less taxes than Americans, and get a LOT more benefits in return. Free healthcare is only one of them. gotta jet, l8r!
