Hi! Friends,
My experience of first 14 days is mixed -
-got the credit card within the promised deadline, but with a mistake
-placement agencies & companies accepting the applcn forms even with the S.I.N card applcn recpt
-till now I've recvd good treatment from the placement agencies, atleast was not insulted like many agencies in India(don't misunderstand me, I'm not abusing India, just comparing)
-CAUTION - u may land up with many stupids in the reception, like 1 of them sent me to an intvw in the Good Friday, though I've cofirmed with her at least twice.
-visited 12 placement agencies for temp & labor & factory jobs. My observation - even in any level of jobs ther's an acute shortage
-bus drivers r in majority cooperative with few exceptions
-I haven't faced till now any one looking down to me for asking questions or being an Indian
-Another observation IT IS REALLY VERY DIFFICULT TO GET ANY JOB WITHOUT A CAR OR CELLPHONE (seniors pls throw some light on this)
-Another irritating fact - many people who r supposed to answer public queries, like in the bus tkt counter, banks, hrdc centre very PROUDLY & obviously stupidly says I DON'T KNOW
A special request to all the recently landed immigrants, pls share ur experience
How you applied for Credit Card and which Bank. I heard need to look for Secure Credit Card and no other option. Planning to go for TD Canada.

Ya, absolutely right for the first 6 months we can only get secured credit cards. I went for Scotia bank. But 6 months down the line, if we maintain sound credit, banks will run after us to give credit cards, at least that is what I'm told.

My advice to all new immigrants is "just hang in there" . Initially there is a lot of struggle , rejections , and frustrations but it all works out in the end and everything will be fine . Do not let people demotivate you and try stay in the company of "sucessful , positive people".
You all will be fine and it is just a matter of time everyone of you will be happy and settled . Some early and some later .
We struggled for 1 year in temp jobs but finally I got a job in a border US town and my wife works as a software engineer for a Bank here . Now planning to buy a place shortly .Things improve with time . Make sure you keep struggling and never lose hope .
My 2 cents

We will find a way or we will make one

btw, what in heck is a "secured" credit card?
u usually get a debit card when u open a checking or savings account, more than that for the first few months u won't really need... unless u're looking to take out a loan...

Its unfortunate gokul you felt that way. But when I came here from India, the idea of having free internet access at libraries and HRDC sounded excellent service to me. Yep, cellphone, you cant get unless you have some kind of ID here. You have to be prepared to wait you get your SIN card. Then, apply for your credit cards, whatever.
When you make a total move to a new country you can expect you come here today and boom every thing is offered in a silver plate!
Lil patience is all required. Hope now you are fine or true to be a would-be canadian.. still complaining??
